Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"Vonnegut"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Kurt Vonnegut 1922-2007, was known as a pacifist intellectual, humanist, and accomplished writer; his popular novels including 'Slaughterhouse-Five' according to Wikipedia, "blended satire, gallows humor and science-fiction".

VONNEGUT

Kurt wrote “Player Piano”,
“Cat’s Cradle”, “Deadeye Dick”,
“Sirens of Titan”,
“Galapagos”, “Slapstick”,
“Canary in a Cathouse”,
“Timequake”, “Palm Sunday”…

Kurt wrote “Breakfast of Champions”,
“’Tween Time and Timbuktu”,
“Fates Worse than Death” and “Happy
Birthday for Wanda June”,
“Welcome to the Monkey House”,
My fave - “Slaughterhouse-five”….

We might think he’s atheistic,
Though some titles invoke God *
- Bitter, tender, humanistic,
Traits today we find so odd.

Kurt wrote “Wampeters, etc”,
“God Bless You” – R. and K. *,
“Jailbird”, “Bagombo Snuff Box”,
“Mother Night”, “God’s Handshake”,
“Hocus Pocus”, “Bluebeard”, “A
Man with No Country”….

We might say he's a dreamer,
In the limits of this rhyme -
I hope someday he'll join us,
His spirit "unstuck in time".

* “God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater”, “God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian”, “Like Shaking Hands with God”.
Note that a few of the titles were changed slightly to fit the pacing.

I expected a tribute, but there's only a bit of that in the third verse. This is more of a list. What's the point, except to demonstrate virtuosity in fitting book titles to a rhythm? Even that's compromised, according to your footnote. I'll withhold a score pending a return comment.

This opus, though carefully rendered, illustrates the difference between mere knowledge and creative craftsmanship. We get precious little of the essence of Vonnegut. I hope this is helpful in some way.

List songs generally are meh. If you are going to do a list parody, you really have to make the song do service to the list, not the other way around.

@Filippo, Agrie etc. Secretly hoped to highlight a different way of thinking about the universe to some readers here. (Must admit, get bored with his books now, enjoyed them decades ago). More detailed discussion of the philosophy of KV, avowed socialist and ACLU supporter, might have unleashed a torrent of invective. Chickened out, and mostly left a reading list. KV said, ....let this be my epitaph, "The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music". Security code HKV !!!!

Torrent Of Invective would make a great band name. Hell, invective be damned, do what you want GC! That never stopped anyone around here, right?!

Feeling feistier today, I will point out that as a tribute I created a complete list of KVs books within the confines of the OS. It is THE singable reference-list (and there are some awfully good titles). What could be said that would summarize KV's humanist philosophy better than the compelling lyrics of the OS? And Lennon's title "Imagine" also seemed pretty apt to characterize KVs fiction. Perhaps it was all too subtle.
