The Lyrics

well, i coulda sworn... that i heard it go quack
so i closed in...and i snuck around its back
i furtively eyed and furtively attacked
i shot me a duck decoy
there was no sign of life...but i hadn't done no harm
it didn't fly off angrily...or swim off in alarm
i merely picked it up...and i tucked it 'neath my arm
i shot me a duck decoy

well, its such a nice find...i sought one all winter
beady eyes lookin' up...with a hole in the center
i'd bite but nothing would i get except a splinter
i shot me a duck decoy

well, i hunt for fun...not to feed myself, although...
i'd be eatin' little...if i had to, doncha know
when there's critters a-creep...you can bet that i will show
i shot me a duck decoy
i'd be out there huntin'...all day if i could
my aim is precise...though my vision ain't too good
pull the trigger all i can...like a shootin' man should
i shot me a duck decoy

well, its such a nice find...i sought one all winter
beady eyes lookin' up...with a hole in the center
i'd bite but nothing would i get except a splinter
i shot me a duck decoy

well, i wouldn't trade my catch...cause i think its real cool
a live one wouldn't last...don't ya take me for a fool
this one is so pretty...its as precious as a jewel
i shot me a duck decoy
got a nice paint job...its the best i've ever seen
the poor 'ol boy who lost it...musta thought that it was keen
and if he knew i had it....man, i think he'd get mean
i shot me a duck decoy

well, its such a nice find...i sought one all winter
beady eyes lookin' up...with a hole in the center
i'd bite but nothing would i get except a splinter
i shot me a duck decoy

its never been real...so this fella never died
don't want it to get weathered...so i keep it safe inside
it sits upon my mantle....and it fills me up with pride
i shot me a duck decoy
musta been a fine man...who sat down and got it whittled
its yellow and green...with a stripe right down the middle
i only fired once...so it isn't bullet riddled
i shot me a duck decoy

well, its such a nice find...i sought one all winter
beady eyes lookin' up...with a hole in the center
i'd bite but nothing would i get except a splinter
i shot me a duck decoy
YEAH !

Let me be first to say this quacked me up, and that, much to the chagrin of this non-lover of the OS, I'm certain to be subconsciously humming it half the day. :-)

What Really grumps me about the OS is that it's for far too long followed "Take Me Out ..." as the O's 7th-inning stretch song. I'm sorry, folks, but Bal'mer's Charm City, not Farm Country. One only hopes our Nats won't tack on any such twanger as they move into the new stadium this year. ANyway, I'm printing out your lyrics an plan to have'em handy to sub for teh real ones next time I visit Camden Yards. :-)

This was a great idea with great rhyming. My fave is the whittled/middle/riddled triad.

Stan, I though YMCA was the 7th inning stretch song these days...

But the most disturbing thing is the shirtless John Denver on the album cover lookin' like Radar O'Reilly.

McK -- I haven't been to Camden Yards for a couple seasons, so it may be "YMCA" now. I certainly hope so. Hahahaha -- "Radar O'Reilly"! I love it!

I can relate. After trampling around in the cold and wet, all birds start to look alike. Wonder what's the statute of limitations on meadowlark-icide? I started a John Denver parody once "He was dead in the autumn after three and fifty years/Going down in plane he'd never flown before". That was all the further I got. For JD fans, look for "Bread and Roses" a feminist labor union song from 1912. Accompanied by a bagpiper (good), gets a key word totally wrong (bad). Same album includes "Alaska and Me" in which Denver refers to himself as "a bush pilot's wife". Wierd. "I Shot Me a Duck Decoy" is funny. I like it better than the original.

Funny and very original...but one question, how did u get that decoy to fly? I know you're too much of a sportsman to shoot a sitting duck, unless it was GWB, of course..uh, no I guess he's a lame one
alvin - March 11, 2008 - Report this comment

Alvin - The other day on my "Eagle" song you said you never shot a bird. Well this is damn close to it. I get it now - you never shot a bird because you are a lousy shot. What's wrong with this picture of you shooting a decoy? When the good Lord passed out brians did you think he said train and duck? As Bug and Daffy would argue - Duck Season! - Rabbit Season -Duck - Rabbit. Boom blow 'em both away and shut 'em up fer good I say. I saw no 7th inning stretch here. I enjoyed every word. Well done Alvin - you never cease to amaze with originality, wit and humor - you are among my faves on amiright, sir. Now make sure that you practice fire arm safety. I'd hate to see your name in the obits of the "North Jersey Herald" and wind up bloared near Cleveland. pr some other places that were sescribed for the dealy departed. We'd miss you 'round here. I'm glad I didn't duck out on reading this. Now be vewy vewy quiet - I'm hunting pahwodies.
