The Lyrics

AND ON MY OWN, SAD TO SAY

It was just some hours ago
That I saw a lovely girl I know,
I promised myself to be myself,
I wanted so much to show
I’m aiming for the top, with no way I would stop,
An ambitious man with a well-made plan
With a view to going places.
But even as we spoke I was broken
Into pieces, she upped and went,
My time was spent,
I found myself in limbo.
I might as well go home
Since I am on my own,
And on my own, sad to say.

When I think that just last night,
All the drink had made me tight,
But I had a dream, well, more a scheme
To see my girl and put things right.
But with morning came the rain,
And I was in loads of pain,
Though I felt quite ill I just took a pill
And I then felt so much better.
Giving me some hope
That this dope could do some healing,
But when we met I cocked it up
She said I had no feeling. So leaving with a sigh
She left me high and dry,
And on my own, sad to say.

It seems that I’m not wanted any more,
And if I go and keep on trying
I’ll end up crying.
What should I do? What should I do?

Reflecting on the past few days,
I’ve tried to think of many ways
To do all that I could and possibly should
To find a way through the maze.
But at thirty-five years old
With a cough and stinking cold,
Never had a hope as I couldn’t cope
With the things she was demanding.
Leaving me no choice as I voiced my own ambition,
And though I tried so very hard
We both knew our position.
She went off in the night,
Now I’m a sorry sight,
And on my own, sad to say.
And on my own, sad to say.
