The Lyrics

Another entry in the Phil Alexander History Division.
I solve my problems and I see the light.
Those boys who would be King, I'll get them out of sight.
There ain't no danger that I go too far.
In this here Shakespeare play, the hunchback is the star.
Richard the Third!

They think I'm causing England lots of pain.
Why don't they understand? Lancaster brought us shame.
Margaret is lying, love for Anne is real.
I got those brats done in, and now I have closed the deal.

Richard the Third!
(He's the third, tough old bird, ain't you heard?)
I've got jewels, I've got glory!
Richard's the man, in this land, in this nation!
The white rose is ruling this story!

I took the Princes and I threw 'em away.
Lancaster royalty belongs to yesterday.
There ain't no chance that Richmond's coming far.
I start believing now, all-powerful, boys, we are!

Richard the Third!
(He's the third, tough old bird, ain't you heard?)
I've got jewels, I've got glory!
Richard's the man, in this land, in this nation!
The white rose is ruling this story!

Who are these men of illusion?
Wrap me in trouble, laced with confusion?
Get my horse out here!

Here comes Earl Richmond and he comes my way!
My kingdom for a horse! I would give it all away!
There ain't no chance that I can survive now!
I've got to face the fact! His sword is coming and OW!
Richard the Third!
(He's a turd, he's deferred, what a nerd!)
I've got grooves, and I'm bleeding!
Yeesh! It's my time, it's the place for my motion
and grave is the way I am feeling!

(He's a turd, he's deferred, what a nerd!)
I've got grooves, and I'm bleeding!
Yeesh! It's my time, it's the place for my motion
and grave is the way I am feeling!

(Richard the Third! He's the third! He's the third! He's the third!)

And the Earl of Richmond was crowned King Henry VII. Of course, when you're stuck in history between your arch-enemy, Richard III, and your son, Henry VIII, it's easy to get lost in the royal shuffle.

Brilliant stuff, Michael - as it happens, I had a girlfriend who was a member of the "Richard III Society" who believe (with quite a large amount of evidence behind them now) that Richard III was a) not a hunchback (it was painted on after Henry became king), b) didn't kill the princes in the tower (it seems they died *after* Richard), but c) Henry VII, realizing his precarious claim to the throne, decided to rewrite history... which he did very successfully.

PS "it's easy to get lost in the royal shuffle" - sounds like it ought to be a Beatles parody ;-)

A brilliant mix of high-brow and low-blow. I loved it. Does this mean you're going to do a song for every Shakespeare play, too? High school and college students will thank you for it. d;:^)

Bob, that's 37 plays! I don't think I can even name them all without looking 'em up! But "I am constant as the northern star..." We'll see.
