The Lyrics

Dedicated to my youngest child who graduated cum laude from a prestigious school of journalism a mere sixteen years from the day she clung to the safety of her daddy's arms on her first day of kindergarten. Anybody here who is an empty nester better watch out for that OUTRO stanza -- there's a couple of real bittersweet lines there ..... I may or may not have been able to do the whole song; but it's only the two slow stanzas that capture how I felt.
INTRO
A long, long time ago ....
I can remember how that little girl used to make me smile
As I looked on at a grade school dance
I wished that I'd have second chance
And maybe she'd stay young a longer while
But high school years made me shiver
With each new milestone it delivered
Good news gives me delight
She's headed off to Cronkite*
I don't remember if I smiled
When I saw the adult in my child
Something made it all worthwhile
The day she walked the aisle

So my, my I'm a merry old guy
Drove my Rampage down to Gammage*
But no parking nearby
Them good ol' dads were getting all misty eyed
Saying: This may be the day that I cry
This may be the day that I cry

OUTRO

I saw a girl who walked the aisle
And I asked her for a little smile
Then she just turned and had to go her way
So I went back to the schoolhouse door
Where I left my baby years before
Of course I knew that I had to keep away
And on the field the children ran
While teachers drew up their lesson plans
But I was all alone now
My babies all have grown now .....

And the three folks she did want to see
The Grandma, Grandpa, and Auntie
They took the light rail to Tempe
The day she walked the aisle
And I was thinking

My, my I'm a teary old guy
Drove my Rampage down to Gammage
But no parking nearby
Them good ol dads were fighting tears in the eyes
Thinking: This may be the day that I cry
This may be the day that I cry

I WAS THINKING
MY! MY! I'm a blubbering guy
Drove my Rampage down to Gammage
Then the old bucket died
Us good ol' Dads we're fighting tears in our eyes
Saying: This will be the day that I cry
This will be the day that I cry!!

*Cronkite School of Journalism ........ *Grady Gammage Auditorium -- famous auditorium designed by Frank Lloyd Wright where the graduation ceremony took place ...... And of course, I'm actually Callmelennie. It's just that I feel like a daddy here ... not a Lennie

The best songs come from the heart.

Yeah, I got a lot of heart for her -- My Little Poser, I call her, because she could always strike a pose when we took her picture, even as a baby. A natural; she could be a model nowadays
