The Lyrics

A long, long time ago,
Nomads hunt and gather
On the fertile plains of river Nile
12,000 B.C., grain, they grew
With simple tools; herd cattle, too
But Global Warming struck; their land, defile

8,000 B. C.: Climate changing
North Africa, land, rearranging
By 2k, new era
Land dried up; formed Sahara
A treed savanna, once, provide
But the grazing grass, it slowly died
So close to Nile, must abide
Live by - the river's side

That's why, ply: build their cities nearby
Gettin' water when they oughter, and it rarely ran dry
Those Egyptian guys were makin'' history fly
So, let's jump ahead: Sadat riding high
Soldier's bullet made Sadat die

Mubarak, a goodly shove
As he took the place: Sadat, above
Each election, easy, go
Do you believe the votes, he stole?
A new trick? No, it's rather ol'
Can't impeach him; not a chance, oh, no

The Egyptians lost their love for him
'Cause of hard-line stance, things lookin' grim
Their civil rights, they lose
Used "emergen-cy" as excuse
While from corruption, made a pretty buck
Unemployed Egyptians had no food, no luck
But breakthrough: one day, back, they struck
A day of protests. wide

They started singin'
"Bye, bye, Hos' Mubarak: Hell, fry"
Took a chance, but they were dancin'; Hosni: glancin', poor guy!
Does he dare destroy in sight of "eye in the sky"?
He's thinkin', "Must be some way I can get by"
"Better come up with a good lie"

For three decades, it's been him alone
And no one dares challenge for his throne
But that's just how it used to be
One contester ran, but the vote machine
Was a joke. Mubarak ran the scene
Seems the "choice": the same chicaner-y

Dr. Ayman Nour said "process: flaw"
Mubarak crowed: "Nour broke the law"
The courtroom, soon adjourned
Stiff verdict was returned
Nour was sentenced: labor, five years, hard
A "forger" locked in prison yard
In Egypt, was all free speech barred
That day, the blues, they cried

They were thinkin'
"My, my, must be something to try"
Send ol' Hosni off to Bosnia. "Laws?" Kiss his a** "bye"
In streets, make noise, and Twitter™ "hither and nigh"
Signs, bringin', "This'll be the day of outcry"
"This'll be the day we defy"

Chanting, ranting, Al Jazeera: slanting
The Army crew, their support were granting
The voices high, and growing fast
Two weeks, and still at impasse
Mubarak fired all his team en masse
"Have elections in September" -- What an a**!

Now Mubarak tries to change his tune
To his V.P., he'll hand power, soon
Not really alter stance:
"Say, what?! Me leaving? Bite my shvantz!"
The protesters once again appealed
Mubarak still refused to yield
"Although I'll, no more, power, wield
"It's here I'll live and die"

Rocks, bottles, flingin'
"Hie, hie, things have all gone awry"
"Leave real soon, or else, buffoon, be strewn like slices: minced pie"
The protests: joys, although the casualties high
And singin', "No one leave; we'll stay here; stand by
"Till we see Mubarak comply"

Oh, and there they were, all in one place
A demonstration "in your face"
Mubarak says, "Let's start again"
A come-on! Not so simple, not so quick
Backlash was coming, fast and thick:
World leaders tell Mubarak, "Time's at end"

Oh, and as the world watched on that stage
The protests, faces drenched in rage
No snowball's chance in Hell
Mubarak: crowd, dispel
As rights, proclaim; loud cry, both day and night
Delight: the World: protesters' fight
Foresaw Fate, at last; perceived his plight
The day, that Dude, defied

He was saying,
"Okay, I will now step away
"Refuge, seek, at Sharm el-Sheikh if you will let me get by
"But restrain your joys, 'cause I've been Israel's ally
"The Muslim Brotherhood'll give you black eye
"Fools! I hope that all of you die"

I bet the World all watched the news
Most were happy: see Mubarak lose
And be exiled, be spurned; go 'way
One more down; add to freedom's lore
'Cause of servitude, sick! All abhor
Former "Man" there, H. Mubarak, has to pay

And in the streets, the people beamed
Their mettle, tried; and their eyes all gleamed
'Cause thanks to words, outspoken
The stronghold had been broken
It's to freedom, we aspire most
Not eas'ly won, and quickly lost
Hard-fought, a vast gain; pour a toast
The day of Egypt's pride

Now, we're all singing,
"Aye, aye, friends in Egypt, strong tie"
While we wait to see what Fate brings, celebrating ally
Freedom, now enjoy; they're feeling frisky and spry
Singin' praises all the way to the sky
"Took a stand, and now you know why"

They are singing
"Bligh, Bligh, kiss Mubarak good-bye
"Kept in slav'ry by his knav'ry, but we bravely defy
"We kept our poise; that stinkin' fink, we say 'Fie' "
Sing, "On Egypt's lesson: all should rely"

A masterpiece. "Their civil rights they lose, use "emergency" as excuse" sounds very familiar. What if we could assemble a couple million people in Washington DC? Remember "Bush=Hitler"? How about "Obama=Mubarak"?

By the way, I left you another reply at St Lucia. (I pronounce it "Lew-chia" as in "Chia Pet".

TT - Powerful close to your Egyptian Cycle. I fervently hope we'll get to do some songs about the fall of the mullahs in Iran. NOBODY measures up! To steal (shamelessly) a famous commercial jingle..."Anything else is just Mock Turtle"! ;D
Andy Primus - February 14, 2011 - Report this comment
Wow, what an epic. I like this the best of the 4. Great rhyming & matching. Learned a new one in "fie" - never heard that before.
Mark Scotti - February 14, 2011 - Report this comment
You OWN this piece of THE PIE, TT! I already commented about the 4 enties on number 3. This was the "pyramid" entry of the day. BRAVO!

Patrick: As TT has written elsewhere many times, alleged "emergencies" have been used throughout history, even in alleged "democracies", to steal people's rights. From FDR confiscating gold in 1933 under the War Time Powers Act of WW *One*, which ended in 1918, to the USA PATRIOT Act, etc., ad nauseam. It's not unique to any party or ideology, but it does continue, sickeningly. We need to vote out *everyone* who votes for, or signs, such measures. Thanks for v/c.
Saw your comment @ Lucia; acknowledged. ... At first, I would pronounce it as you did, based on the traditional Neapolitan (Italian) song, "Santa Lucia", which was recorded by Elvis, who also performed it in Vegas. However, research showed that the island was named by the French, who use soft "c" vs. Italian "ch" (Ciao! -- sounds like "Chow"). But it's still true that the three-syl pronunciation of "Lucia" is perfectly acceptable, contrary to the critical comment at that song.

Old Man Ribber: Thanks for turning the turtle into soup. ;-(         (j/k!) Per Andy P's comment at another of the Fab(ricated) Four, it *may* be starting in Iran. What a glorious day that would be! -- except that the turtle is all parodied out for a while. ;-D       Thanks for v/c!

Andy Primus: I'm shocked! (Truly! -- not kidding) "Fie" is seen in Shakespeare and other Middle English and slightly later works -- and, uh, wasn't WS from, uh, *your* country? ;) ... It appears, e. g., many times in "Hamlet", oft by the Dane of Pain himself, but this writer's fave is Ophelia's well-deserved plaint about the male gender: (Act 4, Scene 5)

By Gis and by Saint Charity,
Alack, and fie for shame!
Young men will do't, if they come to't;
By cock, they are to blame.
Quoth she, before you tumbled me,
You promised me to wed.
So would I ha' done, by yonder sun,
An thou hadst not come to my bed.

ANY-way, thanks for v/c!

Mark Scotti: (bows graciously) Thank you, kind Sir!

That just goes to show that I've never read *any* WS for the fun of it - not my cup of cha. I must have seen it before as I've read the odd bit here and there on web pages to go with a few parodies, but I never remember any of it afterwards. Other than that, no WS since school in the 70's - long forgotten. If you remember from a while back, I've also never seen any of the oldie musicals that you love so much - also not my cup of cha. Wow, that makes me sound like a right philistine. Apt, I suppose, as I like fillies and steins!
Tommy Turtle - February 14, 2011 - Report this comment
Andy Primus: I'm with you on the fillies and steins. But a Brit who doesn't like Will? ? ? He *can* be a *lot* of fun -- *really*.

And without him, how would you ever enjoy, say, FG/TT's send-up of "Romeo and Juliet", or TT's two parodies of same?
http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/dustyspringfield44.shtml
(FG-TT; won't plug my own)

Not to mention TT's seven (7) parodies of Hamlet's famous Soliloquy (very meaningful to anyone who's ever contemplated suicide, as many surely have at some point -- uh, Hamlet, that is, not TT's parodies of it ;), plus one of Lord Polonius from the same play?

Truly "classic", and with good reason. The fact that they endure 400 years later says something. Well, de gustibus non disputandem est, eh? Cheers! @ Wendy Christopher: Security code: LAY ;-D
Buttressed Pediment - February 15, 2011 - Report this comment
A veritable cataract of creativity coursing through your Coptic cursive today, TT--a feat possessing such a pharaohnic degree of 'boss relief' it is unlikely to be unmatched for several millennia to come! TTruly astounding, Thy Quadro-Colossus shall endure throughout time (taking the form of a stone sphyewenx, naturally!) Bravo to the nth!

Buttressed Pediment: Thanks for the v and all those "C"s, heh! ... and LOL @ "boss relief".       Hmmm.... half-sheep, half-turtle -- a Sphewenx? I like it! :)
