The Lyrics

In the very colorful university department where I work, one of our professors was describing the many uses of an animal carcass in his native Iran. There they use every part, not throwing the extras away as we do here. It was kind of gross but fascinating. This one's for Babak.
Now I've been planning lately
To get a lamb for my family
It's such a special treat and
On that, we'll all agree

So I've been cooking lately
Boiling the head for hours today
Oh, that big tongue is tasty
Though teeth get in the way

But one thing is my real favorite
And that's the sheep's brain
The sheep's brains taste like tofu
There's nothing to disdain

Now we've been eating lately
Sharing the great feast we have today
But I believe I'll pass by
Those round things on the tray

Oh, sheep's brain in the blender
Puree the sheep's brain
Yum yum yum, yum yum yum
Let's eat the sheep's brain

Mix sheep's brains with some garlic
Olive oil, onions, spice and sheep's brains
Yum yum yum, yum yum yum
Come get your sheep's brains!

Skin for bags and clothing
Wool fabric's in good taste
Bones make fertilizer
And nothing goes to waste

Now people in the U.S.
Throw parts away, no doubt
But talk of eating brains
Can really gross them out

Now I've been smiling lately
Watching as my mom chews on the lips
And grandpa licks the juices
Off of his fingertips

My brother looks at the plate and
He sees the sheep's brain
The sheep's brain's not his favorite
He eats the eyes again

Wow, it takes brains to write a clever parody like this, and I don't say that sheepishly! Is the lamb for a seder? If so, mazel tov and Happy Passover! 5's

Mari D - Now I'm occasionally a little free with superlatives but this is just completely and totally god-damned (sorry) hilarious! It really is one the funniest things I've ever read here. Not "sly grin" funny, not "sarcastic", "ironic" "moronic" or any of those other "ic" funny's (although this does have it's fair share of "ICK" funny it it, that's a body part of a different odor). Anyway the final By-Product of this is me sitting here at my computer with my head bent down into my hands belly-laughing ("HO-HO-HO, HO-HO, Oh, Sh *t, HO", etc) through the entire read, especially with the very idealistic and upbeat images of the original song as backdrop. There is just so great stuff in here; but the 2nd verse is where the I started to realize what I was in for. I got as far as "Though teeth get in the way" and after that I could not compose myself until I finished reading, got up and washed my face. I'm thinking "Parody of The Month" so far for April. So how come this only has one vote so far and no other comments at 2:30 in the afternoon today? Did the posting's come on real late? I just got on site so I don't know. I know there are a lot of new entries posted today, but people, if you've MISSED this one, make sure you get around to this one. Gotta run, I've got a bunch of stuff to do, I justed wanted to check and see if the site was up and posted, had trouble connecting yesterday. lol...Later...

This parody reminds me of the many Mexican restaurants that serve sesos (AKA Brains) in the West.

Ahhhh, Mari, you li'l rascule. What a wooly yarn you spin! I's lam(b), isn't it? But who are we Americans to mock? In California, and parts of the southwest there's Mexican Menudo, and in Philadelphia it's Scrapple.

Johnny, Paul, Meri, Rod, Jan & Tim: Thanks!

Paul, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I had a good time writing it, too. The postings were late, mid-afternoon sometime.

Johnny, this is not a Passover dish. Actually, it's popular during Persian new year (just passed). The above-mentioned conversation started when a Jewish professor at work and I were talking about weird Jewish food and the Persian professor walked in and described what he ate as a kid. I'll have to ask him what they did with the skull.

Rod, did you mention somewhere that you're a bass player?

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Mari ...... When I was a kid, my family did the Roman Catholic thing of eating fish on Fridays during Lent, but I guess I never learned the details of the Jewish seder/Passover meal tradition.....I ask my Jewish friends out there to please forgive me for my incomplete knowledge of world religions in general and Judaism in particular. Shalom & Salaam & Pax to all !

Thanks, Dave & 2nz! The Persian professor said that I might be able to sell it as an advertising jingle in Iran...

Love it! My fave bits are the "round things" line and "teeth get in the way."

Sorry I didn't notice this earlier, Spaff said sheepishly.

SOTM - Oh, YES. I really ate this one up! (BRUPPP!!).

Mari - How could somebody post a "2-1-2" score for this one? Well, however they figured it that's what they did. 5-5-5 from me here.
Phil Alexander - September 20, 2004 - Report this comment
I guess I'll skip the sheep's brain
The mere thought appals
But I'll fry up the most tenderest part
...and nibble on its balls

;-)
