The Lyrics

Hey, you try writing a parody about a guy who was Prime Minister for only 69 days! At least that topped William Henry Harrison (32 days as President of the U.S. in 1841). Note the British/Canadian spelling of "offence" instead of the U.S. "offense." And, despite his age (74 when he took office in 1896), Sir Charles Tupper was known as a hopeless womanizer. The last survivor of the "Fathers of Confederation," he was his country's Bob Dole, when it needed someone with the skill of Bill Clinton, which he apparently only had with women. But with the question of the rights of French-speakers and Catholics in Manitoba and Western Canada in general meaning more to the people than the "National Policy" of strong tariffs, Tupper was out and Wilfrid Laurier was in.
(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question.

(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question.

Mackenzie Bowell wasn't so bold.
So they wanted me, though I'm so old.
They called me back from mother country
to lead Conservative Party.
Save the life of the old Party.
But I say...

(I backed the tariff!)
But on French schools, I was on the fence.
(I backed the tariff!)
They tell me that it was a Capital's offence.

Liberal voters always hated me.
For what, I don't know.
Every time that I plant a seed
they say, "Your opposition grows."
They say, "Your opposition grows."
But I say...

(I backed the tariff!)
But on French schools, I was on the fence.
(I backed the tariff!)
But on French schools, I was on the fence.

Opposed by Wilfrid Laurier
from Vancouver to Saint John's town
All of a sudden, those French clowns
voted in to knock me down.
I could not
I could not knock them down.
But I say...

(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question.
(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question.

My stiffness got the better of me.
And what is to be must be.
For so long our Party governed well.
But that day, the bottom did drop out.
Yes, that day, the bottom did drop out.
And I say...

(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question, oh no.
(I backed the tariff!)
But I did not solve the schools question, oh no.

I admire your ability to tackle relatively dry political subjects... it strips you of some of your tools (outrageous hyperbole, etc), yet yours is quite enjoyable and cogent... 5's
