Song Parodies -> "Only April Foolery"

Original Song Title:

"She's Always A Woman"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Billy Joel

Parody Song Title:

"Only April Foolery"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

I slipped some piranha fish into your bath
Shouted "Poisson d'Avril", but you still didn't laugh
You have no sense of humour, so evidently
You call "GBH!"
But I call it: April foolery

Then I dropped a piano
Kersplatt! on your head
From the seventeenth floor
Did you laugh? No you said
That the joke fell quite flat
And was rather off-key
Not at all well-conducted
My little April foolery

Oh, then I creep up with stealth
As you're standing in front
And I'm biding my time
BOO! Now did that make you jump?
And you're not gonna win
Just go out of your mind

Then I rigged your door handles
For electrocution
"A little bit short"
Was your shocking conclusion
As you singed round the edges
From 240V
That one had potential
It sparked, this April foolery

Oh, say it's bad for your health
All these terrible pranks
I'm a terrible bloke
No! that is not how it goes
You're just very thin-skinned
And you can't take a joke

Your endless complaints
I considered bizarre
OK, sometimes I went
Just a little bit far
So now I've been convicted
Murder, first degree
But here's what I know
As I sit on death row:
It was only April foolery

Read this right after Kristoff’s and damn you guys are feeling dark today! Cheating spouses and murder charges... I need to go read Stuart’s innocent Charlie Brown song again to feel better about life. Just kidding this was hilarious! Loved the bit about the falling piano especially since Billy Joel is the piano man.

From foolery to felony.

Heh heh. The thing I particularly liked about this parody was, in the piano and electrocution verses, the puns compounded with each successive line. I also picked up on the piano and Joel combo - was the deliberate or fortuitous happenstance? I grant you 555 days stay of execution.
Claude Prez - March 30, 2018 - Report this comment
Yeah I love me some puns! The whole thing was great but the piano verse was my fave

If this parody were chocolate it would be Hershey's darkest variety, not even a glimpse of white chocolate. Submitted for your approval as Rod Serling would have said, but rather this is "Tales From the Dark Side" on meth and steriods. I can imagine AFW howling at this. He is the king of Bates and other original dark ballads. Well done Phil! I was surprised that you reffed the death penalty since the UK abhors the death penalty, you know all that from your dark history about the tower of London and all of that business. I guess whatever works is a good thing and this was marvelous. Dilley Dilley!

Beautifully written with your usual polish Phil, and the gags were beautifully set-up. Should have seen the "That the joke fell quite flat And was rather off-key" one coming! Somehow I also LOL'd at the economy of "From 240V" and the humility of "sometimes I went Just a little bit far". Yes that piano-drop trick should not be tried at home kids - 555

Very clever with the piano verse.

:-) Thanks all.. the original line for the second verse was "I dropped a piano, man, right on your head" but I couldn't sing the comma & so the rest of the jokes didn't work properly. But nobody mentioned the "poisson d'avril" joke, which was my favourite of the lot. Sigh ;-)

Sorry Phil, I guess we’re just not sofishticated enough

Phil, I'm "Wanker" in the comment above.

Ha, I didn't get "poisson d'avril" either. Didn't know the cheese eating surrender monkeys did that (you used that ref once many years ago on one of mine if I'm remembering correctly). Good pacing & funny. I wonder how many non-Brits would think 240V & bloke?
DoRitos - April 02, 2018 - Report this comment

@Andy Ref your last comment. I know "bloke", in fact I know a lot of your "wanker" words & phrases. My car was in an elevator when I "lift"ed the "bonnet" to check something. As for the 240V I believe the ref is to the power grid. Power for most things here in the states is 110 volts except for things like clothes dryers & kitchen stoves & others that run on 220 volts. In the states we use 60 cycle power but in Japan they run 50 cycle power. I lived there for 3 years & had a clock radio I brought from the states. If I wanted to use the alarm on it & say it was 10:00PM or 2200 hours & I wanted to be awakened 8 hours later at 6:00 AM or 0600 hours I had to set that clock when the time was 2200 hours to 2320 hours in order for the alarm to turn the radio on at 0600 hours the following morning so I could wake up & be on time for duty.

I learned the hard way with a clock radio in what was then West Germany. I deployed there for most of the summer of 1985 which was my 1st time to travel there. I plugged the clock radio in & it played a nice song for about 30 seconds & then burnt to a crisp. I was not aware that they ran 240 volt power & you know, I think it was the same clock radio I am reffing to in this comment that I had in Japan. so Andy, am I right on AMIRIGHT about the 240V?

@Anyone from the old gang: I have a question. I have noticed that Elton John parodies for the "Elton John Magical History Tour" are due on or B4 30 Apr 2018. Just as I have numerous Billy Joel parodies I also have numerous Elton John parodies on AIR. In addition to these two artists & some other artists & bands I have numerous favorites that I like to parody. So I plan to take part in the EJMHT. FYI & BAD (Beyond any doubt), I know that I need to write a fresh brand spanking new EJ parody & not use any existing parodies as we did with ABC, SOTM, SOTY, Artistry and the like. My favorite artists & bands reflect most of my better parodies. I'm a story teller & ballads work even better for me. My question is this: Are these special AIR events the only times that the old gang shows up? I am currently working on a parody not related to the AIR special events & it is my desire to post parodies when the old gang is active on AIR. You folks are what makes AIR great & I want to contribute to making AIR great again, let me tell you. REF DJT. I dropped off the site sometime in 2012 & have a lot of catching up to do as I notice a lot of changes on AIR. I request & welcome your feedback to help catch me up on things like this. Anything anyone can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Guy, look at the Amiright Events section on the AIR home page for more info. Three ongoing events are One Week Notice (parody a never-before parodied tune), The Reunion Challenge (wherein the Billy Joel material you saw from the 'old folks' stems from), and Artistry (not generally announced on the event page, but Matthias, The Conqueror Of Parodies and myself have been generally a part of, to parody a particular artist we have pre-selected--find it all on the inthe00s.com threads pertaining to AIR). Some of AIR has turned a bit ugly due to recent political news and divisive Internet behavior, we are trying to "keep the dream alive" you could say. I hope to see you back in full parody business soon.

Thanks Agri.

You wrote "One Week Notice (parody a never-before parodied tune)" This one peaks my interest. Could you please elaborate a bit more on this? I take it to mean that one would conduct a search to determine and confirm that said OS has no parody on AIR. Once finding or in this case not finding the OS after doing the search then it is fair game to write and publish?

Wow ChuckyG really enhanced this site. I am totally impressed. You pointed me to inthe00s.com. Once upon a time, what seems like 'a-hundred' years ago I had a long hiatus and I couldn't get logged into inthe00s.com. I had to send commercial email to ChuckyG and as I recall it was an arduous task. I browsed over to inthe00s.com and I was astounded just how easy-peasy it was to get re-established. I just read the instructions to re-establish the account answered one security question, plugged in new PW and I was there! It took all of 2 minutes to do this. Even my avatar which is a red bag of Doritos was still there!

It has been around 6 years since I last wrote anything so I am a rusty hinge. I need to geek up and this may take a bit. I appreciate the assist. I need to re-learn the email platform in inthe00s.com. I attempted to write to K1chyd but I had a case of 'the 10 thumbs' and somehow lost the text in the message. I was on a page that showed my unread messages. Peter wrote a message to me in 2012 and I was attempting to reply to him. I saw his avatar. I now know what he looks like. Amazing...

May I beg a favor of you? Would you, when you are on the message board, send me a message? This is a bit forward but could you give me your phone number and a good time to call you. I have questions and if you are willing to play customer support you could help me navigate some things, but moreover I want to understand the parody events and when the old gang is active on site No pressure if you don't wish to. In fact I'll take anyone from the old gang if they feel inclined to indulge me.

I just switched my phone carrier to AT&T and my caller ID is WYSIWYG (Old school geek speak for What you see is what you get). Depending on what carrier you have, caller ID will either read No Name or my real name or not. So if "not" be the case, area code will read 210. Comms have become comm-plicated.

I am now fully retired since 31 Jan 2016, drive slow in the passing lane and every day is Saturday for me. I worked IT since 1969 (I was 17 years old when I started IT) and I was burned out with my specialized skill set when I retired. The only constant in the IT field is change and for me it is like muscle memory. Use it or lose it and it happens quickly. On my last work day before retirement, I looked in my side mirror while driving as I left the parking lot at the work site for home and read the warning "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" and somehow I knew that my skill set would wane in a New York minute and it was so. When I get geeked back up I'll have a lot to share with you all in comments, message board and what ever other media there is on the site.

AIR is the only social media I have ever been on and I have good reason for this. I just can never say anything in public media forums if you catch my drift. I have done nothing with IT since retirement but I want to come back to AIR because this is fun. No stress, no pressure, just plain good fun. So it's help an old geek week for anyone who will indulge me. Very respectfully to all you old AIR gangsters and I mean that in a good way. I'll keep checking the comments on this parody thread on a daily basis. Thanks in advance to all of you fine folks.
