The Lyrics

Free at last! Free at last! Effective at noon on January 20th, thank God Almighty, we're free at last! We have overcome! (And I'm white!)
(instrumental opening)

It's nine o'clock on Election Day.
The votes of Ohio coming in.
There's an old man who's a nominee
who now knows that his chances are thin.

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes.
But it's sad and it's sweet, Eisenhowerish feat
when I wore Annapolis clothes!"

La, da-da, da-de-dah...
La-da, da-de-dah, da-dum...

Sing you a song of Obama, man.
He'll be elected tonight.
Well, we're all in the mood for democracy.
And he's got us feeling all right.

Now, John at the bar says, "My friends" again.
He thinks only he'll keep us free.
And he's quick with a joke, but his campaign is broke
and the White House, there he'll never be.

He says, "Bill, I woulda beaten your Hillary,"
and the smile ran away from his face.
"Well, Barack's like celebrity movie star.
And I've got to pander to base."

Oh, la, da-da, da-de-dah...
La-da, da-de-dah, da-dum...

Now, Palin's a novice at politics
but prettier than John McCain's wife.
And her mind is so wavy, like John's was in Navy
and she probably will be for life.

And the waitresses talking 'bout politics
want the Republicans overthrown.
Yes, they're sharing a drink called "recession time"
and they go to the polls, not alone!

(piano break)

Sing you a song of Obama, man.
He'll be elected tonight.
Well, we're all in the mood for democracy.
And he's got us feeling all right.

An enormous crowd here on Election Day.
In Chicago's Grant Park, they all smile.
'Cause Barack, it is he they're all coming to see
and he won in a landsliding style.

And Chicago, it sounds like a carnival
while in Phoenix, they cry in their beer.
Barack says, "Yes we can!" and you know he's the man.
I say, "Man, I'm so glad that you're here!"

Oh, la, da-da, da-de-dah...
La-da, da-de-dah, da-dum!

Sing you a song of Obama, man!
He's been elected tonight!
Well, we're all in the mood for democracy!
And he's got us feeling all right!

(instrumental close)

Pretty good stuff, MP. I hope that we can honestly express similar sentiments a year from now.

Excellent work, MP. I considered writing one with a similar idea, but no point now. TMGLTM but great use of original

Great parody. I didn't vote for him. Just a smile and a suit. But we're here to judge music, and this is a fine example of adapting one of my favorites to a current event.

Patrick: "Just a Smile and a Suit"? That could be a parody of a song from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves called "With a Smile and a Song"!
Papageno - November 10, 2008 - Report this comment
