The Lyrics

In celebration of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple from Virginia, whose U.S. Supreme Court case (Loving vs. Virginia, decided June 12, 1967) led to the end of all state bans on interracial marriage
Richard married Mildred, his true love
He was White and she was Black
The sheriff without warning, on
Their honeymoon attacked

The judge looked at them
Said the world's split up by race
By "divine design"
From Virginia they were chased
For many days (many days, many days....)

Years of exile lay ahead of them
There in Washington, DC
So Richard started laying bricks
To support his family

Mildred took a pen
Wrote to Bobby Kennedy
The ACLU
Sent two lawyers speedily
To them one day (them one day, them one day....)

The Supreme Court took the Lovings' case
And before long took their stand
Interracial marriage no state could
Constitutionally ban

Fifty years it's been
Since that ruling changed our lives
One couple persevered
That's why we can celebrate
This Loving Day (Loving Day, Loving Day....)
