The Lyrics

What do you do when you really, really, really hate a song? Rewrite it with lyrics you like!
In the year nineteen eighteen
the Red Sox played real mean
and Babe Ruth caused a scene.
Just a dream?

In the year nineteen forty-one
the Splinter did something since not done
.406 batting average, whoa
but didn't win like the streaking Joe.

In the year nineteen forty-six
the Olde Towne Team got its kicks
thought they'd beat the Cardinals of St. Loo
but Pesky held the ball too long, it's true.

In the year nineteen sixty-sev-en
dreams became possible once again
the Sox got a Triple Crown from ol' Yaz
but Gibson made them each swing like a spaz.

In the year nineteen seventy-five
Fisk waved his arms and kept hope alive
but after 23 hours more
they were on the short end of the score.

In the year nineteen seventy-eight
a Boston Massacre was their fate
the Yankees won that great Playoff game
and Bucky Dent got a new middle name.

In the year nineteen eighty-six
thought at last we had the Curse's fix
but Stanley threw a wild pitch, that sucks
and here's a grounder to Billy Bucks, whoa, whoa.

In the year nineteen ninety-nine
I thought we were gonna make it this time
I'd like to blame our loss all on the umps
but against the Yanks you can't field like chumps, whoa, whoa.

Now it is two thousand three
fans cry for eternity
never can seem to change the tune
now comes Aaron (Bleeping) Boone.
But back there in Fenway Park
in the light, or forever dark
perhaps all in spite of myself
maybe it's still 1912...

In the year 1918
the Red Sox played real mean
and Babe Ruth caused a scene.
Just a dream?

In the year 1941
the Splinter did something since not done
.406 batting average, whoa
but didn't win like the streaking Joe...

You had to mention Billy B, huh? Why? Haven't we Red Sox fans suffered enough? OK, to prove my good sportsmanship, here's a Triple 5 you can go stuff in your freakin' dugout.

Michael, Ahh. a little walk down "Misery Lane" for all the Bosox fans out there. Still it's hard for me to feel sorry for any Boston sports fans cause I had to suffer through 20 + years before the Lakers finally beat the Celtics in the finals. All through the 60's the Lakers would usually get to the finals and a couple times they even came close, but they always came up short to the Celts. Real problem was Boston played a team game and the Lakers played the old "Star" System. Elgin & Jerry and beyond that hold your breath. Team game will usually win in that situation if they have any real talent and some depth....but...IF,IF,IF...ONLY Frank Selvy had made that little 10 footer from the side in 1962 all that misery might have been avoided. "Course then the 80's wouldn't have seemed so sweet.

Great job on the song. In the year 1975, the Red Sox were defeated by baseball's last true pre-free agent dynasty (the Big Red Machine).

Michael, you were arrogant before the Yankees got A-Rod, can you be any more so? I like the chances of the Angels again this year... but, it could be a long summer. Anyway, very good parody.

Michael, I don't think you spend much time (if any) on the Messageboard, but you might want to check out the March Madness parody tournament that Claude Prez is organizing and try your luck.

Oh, come on, Merry, surely there's a flu song or two from Malcolm's oeuvre. Hmmmm, "oeuvre," that sounds like something you've got too much of when you have the flu. Though whether it's more prevalent in men or women, I don't know, and wouldn't know whether to warn you if I did!

"Bucky Dent got a new middle name" - that is brilliant! Awesome parody - perhaps it took you writing this for them to finally win!
