The Lyrics

I don't know who did the original, but Tommy Tightpants had the best-known version. Part of my all-30-teams bid, this is for the Houston Astros.
Old Houston town ain't the same as I step out off the plane.
And there to meet me are Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio.
At the plate, I see old Larry Dierker.
This scene's a real tearjerker.
It's good to touch the fake green grass of Dome.

Yes, they'll all come so intent on finally winning the Pennant.
Oh, it's good to touch the fake green grass of Dome.

The Astrodome's still standing, and the air is cool and dry.
And there's that old bullpen I used to pitch in.
Yes, I'll come in to relieve Nolan Ryan.
It feels so good, I feel like cryin'.
It's good to touch the fake green grass of Dome.

Yes, they'll all come so intent on finally winning the Pennant.
Oh, it's good to touch the fake green grass of Dome.

Then I awake and look around me. Enron Field surrounds me.
And I realize I was only dreamin'.
We're getting beat by the lowly Padres.
Soon the Braves will bring us misery.
It just ain't like the fake green grass of Dome.

Yes, they'll all come to see me
while I'm losing 15 to 3
and I sure do miss the fake green grass of Dome.
Don't waste your tears on the Astros: Their 42-year inability to win a Pennant is their penance for building sports' first dome and laying down its first artificial turf. The Curse of the Sham-bino.

I may be wrong, but Porter Wagoner did a version of this which may have been earlier than Tom Jones'.

I'm back. Just checked out a site on Curley Putman, the man who wrote this song. Wagoner recorded it in 1965; Tom Jones, in 1967.

You just missed one fact: Enron Field is now Coca-Cola Field. Remember the day Enron went bankrupt?

Oh, sorry, I just remembered: It's Minute Maid Park. (Does Coca-Cola still own Minute Maid?)

Yes, Coke still owns Minute Maid.
