Parody Song Title:

"Producer of the Pack"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

R.I.P. George Francis Morton, 1940-2013. "Shadow" was a brilliant, and eccentric, music producer in the 1960s, much like Phil Spector, only without guns. Also like Spector, he produced songs written by Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich for girl groups, in his case the Shangri-Las. Also like Spector, in the 1970s he moved on to a punk group, in his case the New York Dolls. This will work better if you imagine the girls singing, as the Weiss and Ganser sisters did, with N'Yawk accents.
(Girl 1)
Was he really a great producer?

(Girl 2)
Well, there she is, let's ask her.

(Girl 1)
Hey, Grandma, was that Shadow who produced your records?

(Grandma)
Mm-hm.

(Girl 2)
Gee, it must've been great singing for him.
Could you introduce us to him after school?

(Grandma)
Mm-mm...

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
By the way, where'd you meet him?

(Grandma)
I met him at the studio.
He turned around and smiled at me.
You get the picture?

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
Yes, we see.

That's why I sang for
Producer of the Pack!

Singers were always putting him down.

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
Down, down.

(Grandma)
They said he didn't know squat about sound.

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
Whatcha mean, that they said, he didn't know squat about sound?

(Grandma)
They told me he was nuts!
But I knew he had guts!
That's why I sang for
Producer of the Pack!

One day our label's chairman's stack blew.
He said we were late with album new.

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
Whatcha mean, you guys were late with album new?

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
I stood there and asked him why.
He said, "Relax, sales high."
That's why we sang for
Producer of the Pack!

He also produced Janis Ian and Iron Butterfly.
But the years were beginning to show.
He produced the New York Dolls on rainy nights.
I begged him not to smoke.
But even though he heard, he treated it as a joke.

(coughing sound effects)

Shadow, quit smoking! Quit! Quit! Quit!

I felt so helpless, what could I do?
Remembering the hospitals that he'd been through.

These new acts that sing, I stare.
Producers they got, don't think they care.
I'll never forget him.
Producer of the Pack!

Oo-whoo-whoo-whoo...

(Girl 1 and Girl 2)
Gone...

(Grandma)
Producer of the Pack
and now he's gone.

(repeat 'til fade)
In case you're wondering about the Shangri-Las, sisters Betty (66) and Mary Weiss (64) are still alive, but the Ganser twins are dead, Mary Ann in 1970 (she was only 22) from (depending on whose story you believe) either a drug overdose or encephalitis, and Marge in 1996 from cancer.

The absolutely perfect tribute to a very talented man - I reckon he'll be smiling, wherever he is. 555 for a top job, Michael.

Michael - This is my favorite kind of parody (which means I've learned something). My favorite producer is Sir George Martin, whom I call The Fifth Beatle. Good job. ;D

Good tribute to someone I haven't heard of, and a good long write
