Song Parodies -> "Tell You, You're a Pain"

Original Song Title:

"Tell It To the Rain"

Original Performer:

The Four Seasons

Parody Song Title:

"Tell You, You're a Pain"

Parody Written by:

Michael Pacholek

The Lyrics

Don't know the original song? It's from 1967, one of the last hits for the classic Seasons lineup of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito (not to be confused with the Joe Pesci character in "Goodfellas") and Joe Long -- the latter having replaced Nick Massi in 1965, and thus the Seasons now had something in common with the Beatles, a lefthanded bass guitarist. Massi died in 2000, the rest are still alive. Here's a link to the recording, which was harmonious enough to be true to the Seasons' style, but DeVito's guitar was current enough to fit in with the British Invasion and the rising tide of psychedelia (Robbie Krieger of the Doors ripped off his opening riff for the Seasons' next hit, "C'mon Marianne," for "Touch Me"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNchVD5VANo
(instrumental opening)

You're crying now, but, hey, it's me who cried before.
Long as I'm with you, girl, I'll be crying more.
You can save all your words, girl
'cause your voice I deplore!

Tell you, you're a pain.
It's not worth having your love.
You're not what I'm dreaming of.
You need a shove.
Tell you, you're a pain.

I gave you love, and got your blabbing in return.
I left but came back, I guess I will never learn.
You can talk behind my back
and I'm feeling my ears burn.

Tell you, you're a pain.
It's not worth having your love.
You're not what I'm dreaming of.
You need a shove.
Tell you, you're a pain.

(Tell you, baby!)
Yeah!
(Tell you, baby!)
Yeah!
(Tell you, baby!)
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!

(instrumental break)

Tell you, you're a pain.
It's not worth having your love.
You're not what I'm dreaming of.
Heaven's sakes above.
Tell you, you're a pain.

Oh, whoaaaa...
(Tell you, you're a pain.
It's not worth having your love.)
Oo woo woo woo woo woo...
(You're not what I'm dreaming of.
Heaven's sakes above.
Tell you, you're a pain.)

Oh, whoaaaa...
(Tell you, you're a pain.
It's not worth having your love.)
Oo woo woo woo woo woo...
(You're not what I'm dreaming of.
Heaven's sakes above.
Tell you, you're a pain.)

(repeat 'til fade)
The preceding is not meant to refer to any real-life woman.

Michael - Tasteful "Seasoning". With you, there is never any fear of peaks and "Vallis".

Good to know you think my ability to redo Frankie's songs isn't... rusty.

At least she was good for a song. My previous works on this theme are intended to refer to a real person.

Fascinating back-story, a pleasant reminder of your comprehensive knowledge of the Golden Oldies and of ability to write about other than politics. ;)
What's needed is more creativity -- I know it's there -- rather than having essentially two subbed stanzas and (almost) the same chorus repeated five times. It's not as though there's a shortage of subs for "rain/pain".

Abstaining from voting, to avoid any hint that our differences in, uh, "other" areas came into play, but a well-varied rendition of your cute concept and switch would have been a sincere 555.

"Love" subs are limited -- always problematic -- so wouldn't mind some reuse there (haven't checked stresses vs. OS, DK from memory well enough):

Take this candy cane
Where give birth, place it and shove
Till it sticks out up above
Your rear: my glove
Girl, you're inhumane!

("Hellish harridan" would be cute and clever, though only a slant-rhyme to "rain/pain". Hey, if slant-rhymes were good enough for Emily Dickinson.... and skip the Asian cracks, please. ;)

(Artistry) Nice job Mike! This son certainly wasn't a pain to listen to. LOL

(Artistry) I could never be as verbose as Tommy Turtle (who could?), but I agree with his post above.

It's crazy to see you actually participate in a contest but even crazier is the fact that "Frankie Valli" is the artist that caused you to join us. I've heard him on all the oldies stations but never really knew how big of a fan people were of him until this round.

I love that you are in this round, and you entered with a great parody, I am impressed immensely by your pacing--I mean most pacing I can see it working but it'd take practice, yours could be sung over the song with little or now practice. . .good job

Artistry...it's a good thing I caught your final comment there, Mister Pacholek...I was about to be really offended. ; ) Nice work here...fun to see you in a comp!

(Artistry) Interesting idea, but not really funny. Maybe it's the limited nature of the OS, but this parody just seemed kinda...plain to me. I guess I was expecting more of a "I'm So Sick Of You" by Weird Al kind of a parody, I dunno. Welcome to Artistry and all that, though.

(Artistry) When you say that the parody is not meant to refer to any woman, you mean that it refers to all women collectively, right? Ha ha? Ha? Why are you women staring at me like that? Why are you taking off your stilettos? Oh my god is that monkey spleen on those heels? Gotta run.
