Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"Dear Judas"

Parody Written by:

Paul Robinson

The Lyrics

The First 'Reality' Show, "Survivor - Calvalry Hill", with Jeff Probst as "Pontius Pilate"...Will Judas take home the Silver?

Dear Judas, why did you betray me?
Dear Judas; was crucified today
They put me up there on the cross
They weren't aware what it would cause
Dear Judas, Why'd you treat me that way?

Dear Judas, do you realize?
Dear Judas, after this I'll rise
The pain is great; the nails sure sting
To die this way is agony
Dear Judas; you'll be stigmatized

Take me down, down
Take me down, down, down
Take me down...

Dear Judas, you will be reviled
Dear Judas, now you're in denial
You sold me out for little gain
Now you will see me rise again
Dear Judas, will we someday reconcile?

I always thought Judas got pretty bad press: after all, in order to fulfil the prophesy, one of the disciples had to betray Jesus. Who's to say whether Judas actually wanted the job or not?

\Well, being an "outside" observer of Christianity I would have to say that I have always kind of wondered about that, too...although I can't say I have spent a whole lot of time on the issue. But the logic of it is curious.

This works very well! BTW, did you write this to coincide with the video release of "Passion of the Christ"?
Paul Robinson - August 31, 2004 - Report this comment
Mari D - Actually, no. I had started on this one a couple months ago and had pretty much finished it and then kind of forgot about it. I was looking for some Beatles songs to do and saw "Dear Prudence" and it reminded I had this one sitting around. It was really 99% done, can't remember why I hadn't finished and posted it back then. However, I DID run across some mentions of "Passion..." when I was researching to check the spelling of "Calvalry" for my "pre" comments. I also ran across an article by a Medical Doctor who is also considered a Bible scholar where he gives a complete run-down of how he thought Christ was crucified and exactly how he died. Pretty damned gruesome, I'd have to say. I had read some on it before but this was even more fully detailed. Thanks!

Adagio, Thanks! alvin - in that case, read & laugh and sin no more than you did the day before.

Pretty good one. The Bible has endless possibilities for creating parodies - we have one coming out tomorrow.

It's just boring. I don't know...Maybe I'm displacing my aggression at my own ineptitude on you, but if so, who cares? Not me...433...whoop whoop dee...nominal fee...barking up the wrong tree...that's enough.

Thayer, Your call...whatever, right? Yeah, the lyrical text by itself is not particularly hilarious. I think perhaps someone who actually writes parodies probably gets more out of it than someone just reading. Not to get too hi-falutin, but what starts as fooling around as a hobby becomes a craft to you after a while. And sometimes you toss in some acknowledgement when the author refers to historical or iconic subjects (you know, the "Bible" stuff)...And you read, react and often comment from that perspective. But that said, there is no rule that says you can't just say..."Eh...not that funny..." and then score it the way you see it. After all, there is no test later - I've got no problem with that...I suppose it might be amusing in a way that your comment compelled me reply, but when I read it I could see where you were coming from...which prompted me to explain (see above...lol) a bit from the writer's perspective. I see songs as vehicles...and try to see what fits in them lyrically and in tone or expression. If I can come up with lyrics that tell a story succinctly and can make the pace and rhyme schemes work I'm gonna do it...because that's what I do with songs. If I can make them gut-bustinly hilarious I surely will, you can count on it...but, alas, I could find any hilarity to work into this piece at the time I did it. Anyway, I'm OK with the score, you were honest...although I suspect your "displaced aggression at your own ineptitude", influenced the "4" you gave me in "pacing", dude...lol...I'm not harmed, but you really ought to find a better way to deal with it. Thanks ~ ~ ~
