Original Song Title:

"Across the Universe"

Original Performer:

The Beatles

Parody Song Title:

"Across-tic Universe"

Parody Written by:

Rick Duncan

The Lyrics

Writing these things is like doing a puzzle.
Words are sprawling onto endless pages in my puzzle-book
They baffle while they tick me off in this
Across-tic universe
Clues that borrow ancient phrases
Boggling my cryptic mind
Possessing and obsessing me
"Island east of Tahiti"? Ummmm.
Nothing's gonna solve this grid
Nothing's gonna solve this grid

Images of missing letters dance before me like a million "I"s
They tease me in this hard
Across-tic universe
Man, I'm thinking that I'm Forrest Gump
Eating a box of chocolates
Stumble blindly staring at
Across-tic universe
"Language of Asia Minor"? Ummmmm.
Nothing's gonna solve this grid
Nothing's gonna solve this grid

"Hours of pleasure!" claims the cover
Don't think that I quite agree
Frustrating and irating me
Dimwitness affects me though I have my
Dictionary and Thesaurus looking up words for
Across-tic universe
"What's on page ninty-seven?" Ohhhhhh

Thanks Johnny. This was a toughie. Glad to be almost done with these. (Yes, the rest of you don't have to write "so are we")

What's a seven-letter word for your score on this one? "P-E-R-F-E-C-T!"

ROFL! Phil's going to love this one

Well, I like what I read and the comments have me thinking I'd like it even more if I could place the tune for it! (I know we have it, but I'm drawing a complete blank.) I'm going to wait to vote until I've had a chance to take a listen.

Excellent parody with a strong ending.

Why don't I know this Beatles song? I have noticied that since Mr. Beatles man, Rick, arrived on the site and posted about every Beatles song ever composed, there are a lot of these I have either forgotten or never heard. Hard to imagine this since I was about 12 or 13 when the Beatles first arrived on the scene. I do like the idea of your parody and I'm sure it will be a strong contender in the ABC competition.

I dont know this one either... but very appealing lyric

That's two of you that say they don't know this. It's on "Let It Be" (The last released Beatle album) and was in the movie. It was on "Anthology #3" and had several other re-releases. I believe it was in another movie recently, but I can't remember which one.

I guess I never commented but it didn't take my fives so I know I voted on this earlier. Oddly I'm more familiar with David Bowie's version of this. Excellent.

Stoney cross-worded parody, man... Cross-a-delic. Nonsensical-like, but hey, that's the song itself, right?

Rick D - This one came out about 10 days before I got to "amiright" so I never saw it. very nice...5'z.

I agree with you that parody writing is like doing a puzzle. I start with a bunch of odd-shaped pieces and try to cram them together. This one came together very nicely, RAD. I can't say a cross word about it. Heh heh. I particularly liked "irating" and "dimwitness." And for those who don't think Beatles covers are utter sacrilege, check out Fiona Apple's cover of AtU on the Pleasantville soundtrack. ("Nothing's gonna change my world" - get it?) It plays over the closing credits and is beautiful.

Great, you entered the contest lol. everyone in the contest will fear these dreaded words...Rick, i loved it! you will most likely* win -at least- 3rd place. *Most Likely meaning probably, maybe, not guaranteed etc. (i hope i spelt guaranteed correctly)
Rick D - September 03, 2004 - Report this comment
I'm not in it to win, Silver. I'm here for the banter, the jokes and the fact that I'd rather be conversing with you bunch of strangers than almost all the people I've ever worked with. When I make a pun or say anything wittier than "She had a balcony you could do Shakespeare from", I generally attract strange looks. You people "Get it".
Arwen - September 03, 2004 - Report this comment
Wait a second, Rick....you're not in it to win?

Silver, can you give any preference that you may have given Rick to me...since he doesn't care anyway...because I, for one, AM in it to win. That is the only reason I frequent this joint...; ) What is it that I'm winning again???

P.S. Rick, I don't get it...; )
Johnny D - September 03, 2004 - Report this comment
Go for it, Arwen! If you win, you'll get your very own pattern of magnetism that can be transduced into sequences of electrical voltages which encode low-level machine language packets capable of being translated into an incredibly long string of 1's and 0's which when fed through appropriate software generates a two-dimensional color image of an AMIRIGHT MEDAL! ;-D

Uh...do I have to understand what the crap Johnny just said to be eligible for first prize?

I don't speak computer jargon, Mr. D. One time, I took a class in Pascal. I wanted to kill myself. Dumbest thing I ever did.
