In 1945, not only Germany but the Allies had fast piston engine aircraft in the works. The Germans had the Fw Ta 152 and Do-335 with speeds in the 470s. The US had the P-51H, P-47N, and XP-58 all in the 440-450 mph range. And Britain had the M.B. 5, Supermarine Spiteful and Seafang, as well as the early Hawker Hunter in the 460-490 mph range! German jets were expected in the 600- supersonic range. Fortunately, the war ended before the Germans added SAMs, revolver cannon, AAMs, and Tv guided missiles!
