Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

The law has finally been passed - based on a 2011 report saying parody in the UK (now there's another one to write) should have the same sort of "fair use" as you do in the States, no longer requiring parody writers to get approval from copyright holders before changing the words to a song. This isn't so much :-) as :-D with a lot of exclamation marks after it. Thank you Vince Cable; you took your time, though.

PS "Copyright holder" has 2 syllables, OK ;-)
Parody
Can now be created legally
Not requiring permission from the
Copyright holder for parody

Sa
-tirical
Is OK, as is political
So too is humorously lyrical
Keep parodies satirical

They've just changed the law
I'm not sure
Seems odd to me
Why it took so long
Yes, it was wrong on parody-ee-ee-ee

Parody
I no longer have to worry-ee
'bout legal bastards coming after me
When I perform my parody

Time Warner, of course
Hey! Up yours
Yes, now I'm free
To write what I like
On your bike.. it's parody-ee-ee-ee

Parody
In the UK's just become more free
And that's good for you (and great for me)
So let's all write our parody

I'd take it that first sentence in the intro means you're thinking about writing "Parody in the UK" to The Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK"? Now that song could be used for another topic too, I seem to remember you have pretty good knowledge of germs and chemistry and biology and sh*t, hence you are probably one of the few parodists that could do anything serious with the title "Ebola in the UK" (or US) if there's another media panic down the road.

Not sure that I'll write it - parodies to Anarchy in the UK always seem a bit disjointed (like the original, really).. But I'm going to play this one at a gig tonight & will probably finish it off with a chorus from AitUK parodied :-) If you're thinking of an ebola parody, what about:

Super scary contagious ebola epidemic
People die in millions will cause a major panic
Finding a new vaccine is no longer academic
Super scary contagious ebola epidemic

Phil, did this enlightened new law just recently get passed? I just got home from 2 weeks in Scotland and don't recall seeing or hearing about about it. Anyway, good take on it.

JJ - it was first raised in 2011 after a report recommended various changes, including parody to be given a similar "fair use" copyright exemption the way the US has; I don't think that's exactly what has been passed, but I've not read what actually says yet: they were talking about it on the Today Programme on R4 a couple of days ago, and there's been a couple of blog posts. I'm a bit surprised the BBC haven't done more with it, to be honest.

Thank you for clarifying, Phil. And thanks for all you do to try to keep Amiright worth perusing.

Congrats on sUKcess in your long struggle to liberate the derivative arts. Creative pacing bumps should be considered part of our toolbox. Anyway, CoHos only deserve 2 syllables.
