The Lyrics

Happy Purim! Yesterday morning, Sunday, March 16, 2014, I attended "The Megillah according to the Beatles" at the Reform Temple of Forest Hills (Queens, NY), a Purim party and performance where the story of Esther was set to Beatles tunes. They didn't use "Oh! Darling", but the following day, I was inspired to write this! Esther's cousin and guardian, Mordecai, is appealing to her in a dire situation. MORDECAI:

Oh, Esther! Dear Queen Esther,
They plan to do us great harm!
Believe me, Cousin Esther,
We’ll all be buying the farm!

Oh, Esther, please believe me
Though it’s incredulous news:
They made a royal edict—ooh!—
Meant to destroy all the Jews!

Well, that Haman—
He’s such a mean and evil dude!—
Well, he tried to bribe your husband with cash.
Well, that Haman
Helped pass a law to kill the Jews;
Then, you know, I put on sackcloth and ash!

Now, Esther, if you’re silent,
Help comes in some other way,
But you will not survive it,
So don’t you turn me away.
(Believe it, Esther!)

When that Haman—oy!—
Saw that I won’t bow to his face,
Well, you know, he got all ticked off and pissed.
But, dear Esther,
My little cousin whom I raised,
Who knows? You came to royal power for this!

Oh, Esther, don’t you see, girl?
Now you can stop this thing!
(Time for action, honey!)
Believe me when I beg you—arggh!—
You’ve got to plead to the king!

You remember well. The Megillah is a gripping account.
