In 1968, a Soviet Golf-Class missile boat went rogue and trying to pose as a Chinese sub attempted to launch a 1MT missile (SS-N-5/R21) at Pearl Harbor. It sunk under mysterious circumstances, but the hatch was open. The book "Red Star Rogue" covers this, but also the movie "Phantom" which is available at Walmart or for rent with Redbox (Ed Harris as Captain). The wreck sank to over 15,000 ft deep in the Pacific and way off course (missile had range of 850 miles). The covert Glomar Explorer recovered her and at least 1 missile. From that report, now declassified, most of the crew died around the missile tube and in the torpedo room. Someone had taken over the boat but the crew appears to have prevented the launch as the missile blew in the tube, sinking K129.

Note: I was just 4 years old in 1968. Had the boat succeeded in the lauch and faked Chinese signature, the US would have nuked China allowing the USSR to sit back and watch one enemy destroyed and another weakened.
