The Lyrics

The title of Adagio's parody a few days ago reminded me of an earlier use of the phrase "hang together".
Here comes Ben Franklin, he's been printin' Poor Richard's
Glasses on his eyeballs, he investigator
Studies electricity
Flies a kite, if lightning strikes, he sure will be pleased

Here come James Madison and Thomas Jeffer-
Son and Patrick Henry and the Adams cousins
Tom says, "Men are made equally"
From the British monarch we are goin' to be free
Hang together....or hang....separately

Their big production was a Declaration
Of our Independence from the British Empire
They said, "We're all endowed with rights"
After they had finished, Franklin gave this advice:
Hang together....or hang....separately

[instrumental]

In eighty-seven it's a Constitution
That they made in Philly, where a woman asked him
She say, "What have we begun to reap?"
It is a republic, ma'am, if it you can keep
Hang together....or hang....separately

Hang together
Hang together
[repeat and fade]

Thank Heaven that at our nation's nativity, we had the gift of "Franklin - sense!" ;D

Nice tribute to our nation's un-hung heroes!

Unlike adagio's, this one made sense, although that's no slight to her, as hers was intended to mimic the senselessness of TOS. Great tribute to the Founding Fathers -- too bad we've ignored and abandoned their advice. .. And nice to see you back!

Would you mind telling me how 'your' title is different? It is meant the same way!!!
Benjamin Franklin @ adagio - October 10, 2009 - Report this comment
At the signing of the Declaration of Independence, I said,

"We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."

-- a pun, meaning that if we don't "stick together" we will all be EXECUTED (by the British), since back then, hanging was the chief means of capital punishment. I find not a reference to capital punishment in your work, so that is the difference.

Always happy TTo help!
