The Lyrics

I'd like to be - like a fish in sea
and grow me long and scaly mermaid's tail
I'd comb my hair - so long and fair
and wear a top of finest knit of scale -
I'd then swim the butterfly -
Leave Mike Phelps - far off behind
I'd like to be - like a fish in sea
and tend a Mermaid's Garden in the deep

I'd hang around - and socialize
with dolphins and with fish of coloured stocks -
All jewelry which I would wear
would be both corals and seabed precious rocks
In the evening I would polish my scales
and then go out - hanging with whales
I'd like to be - like a fish in sea
and tend a Mermaid's Garden in the deep

I'd like to eat - the green seaweed
as salad with the tasty sashimi
I'd share those joys - with the human boys
who'd come to visit my place and please me -
But alas! There's a problem for life -
Would he like a fish for his wife?
I'd change to be - a human being
and leave my Mermaid's Garden in the deep -
And leave my Mermaid's Garden in the deep!

I hesitated between 333 and 444, the pacing felt stretched at times and the theme didn't feel original compared to the original, but it read well as a poem so I'll go with 444. :-)

A "mermaid", while much more attractive, just can't be stretched over "octopus" in the chorus. Cute stuff, though.

I made some adjustments while singing. It is a cute idea.

Cute, but watch out for sharks. A mermaid would never get a man because mermaids were originally the sirens who lured sailors sailing their ships to the rocks.

As a former competitive swimmer, I have been fascinated of mermaids all my life. They must be one of the most lovable fantasy creatures around - especially by young girls. 2Eagle: Actually mermaids and sirens are of diffenrent stock - mermaids are vain but innocent and extremely curious of humans, while sirens are nothing short of malevolent man-eaters. The mermaids of the fables fall very easily in love with human men (and if they cause their death, it is all mishap or being careless, or not remembering humans cannot breathe underwater), but even the lucky mermaid will face the perennial problem: how to deal with the fishtail in bed? ...Sharks? Do women have to worry about man-eating sharks? Agrimorfee: the article "a" is meant to be a stressed syllable before "mermaid" - "a mermaid" and "octopus" have both three syllables.
