The Lyrics

I'm gonna have to explain myself at the Pearly Gates for this, but it's been said that God is the ultimate comedian, and if Denis Leary is still alive and successful after his bit about how if Jesus had lived to 40 he would've been like Elvis at the end, then I got a shot.
(instrumental opening)

Got a good reason
for taking a busy day off.
Got a good reason
for taking a busy day off, now.

'Cause it was Yom Kippur.
Day Atonement, yeah.
It took him so long
to wait out.
But waited out.

He's no great pitcher.
He ain't no Sandy Koufax.
He's no Hank Greenberg.
But today he's allowed to be lax, now.

'Cause it was Yom Kippur.
Day Atonement, yeah.
It took him so long
to wait out.
But waited out.

(instrumental break)
Oy... oy... oy... oy...

Tried to please her
but not as long as this night stands.
Tried to please her
but not as long as this night stands, now.

'Cause it was Yom Kippur.
Self-denial, yeah.
It took him so long
to wait out.
But waited out!

Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur, oy.
Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur, oy.
Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur, oy.
(repeat 'til fade)
Hank Greenberg sat out a day of a close Pennant race in 1934. Sandy Koufax sat out Game 1 of the World Series in 1965. (Yom Kippur doesn't always fall on the same day of the Christian calendar.) Both not only got away with it, their teams did, too, and they're both in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Contrary to popular belief and Adam Sandler's "Hannukah Song," Rod Carew has never actually converted. Speaking of that song, like Harrison Ford, I'm one-quarter Jewish, not too shabby. Jewish or not, call your mother! And tell her to vote on this parody, too!

TJC: I appreciate the comment, but the word you're looking for is actually spelled "mensch," with an extra S. PMS: Actually, it's got nothing to do with baseball -- and, on Yom Kippur, neither did Greenberg or Koufax. Malcolm: "Oi vey"? Funny, you don't look Australian AND Jewish! I'm still waiting to hear back from Fran Drescher. She actually looks better now than when she was on "The Nanny"!
