The Lyrics

Finally got an idea for my long-dormant "I'm A Commuter" series. Inspired by the canned messages heard on the local subway cars. And just for fun, I will take the heat for both Jo Jo and Loretta.
[band sets up in a subway station,
and starts an improptu performance]

Gotta get to work, I'm waiting for the subway
Now here comes the part I dread
All these crazy people hear a canned announcement
Here's what the recording said

Step back, step back
Step back to let the people off
Step back, step back
Step back to let the people off

Step back, Steve!
(guitar solo)

Step back, step back
Step back to let the people off
Step back, step back
Step back to let the people off

(electric piano solo)

Then we get our chance and cram into the doorway
Standing on each other's toes
But before we go, the voice has one more message
Now the doors have got to close

Step back, step back
Step back so that the doors can close
Step back, step back
Step back so that the doors can close

Step back, you bozo!
(guitar solo)

Step back, step back
Step back so that the doors can close
Step back, step back
Step back so that the doors can close

Ooooooooo

[subway police stop the performance,
but one wise guy in the band says]
Thank you on behalf of the Transit Authority
I hope we find our way out

[alternative studio version ending]
Step back, Stephen, your boss can wait for you
Hoping for high production and low overhead
Step back, Steve, go to work
Step back, step back
Step back so you can go to work
Step back, step back, step back, oh yeah
Go go

Thanks, JB, M and SMcA. I forgot to mention that the electric piano is played by an African American musician sitting in with the band, who later becomes a star in his own right.

Steve, I thought that was great. When I was in London in 1982, I loved the way the announcement said (prior to the doors opening) : "Mind The Gap". How about that for a future parody ? :)
