The Lyrics

Well, here's my separate take on the "Great Amiright.com Author's Meeting at the Denny's in Northridge, CA, aka, * PAMP..."...It's based quite loosely on true events...very loosely...what's true: The four of us (Merry, Pippin, alvin rhodes, myself + Bonnie (alvin's wife) arranged to and did meet at this Denny's, had a decent meal, a ton of laughs and an all-around wonderful time together. When the meal was done Merry suggested combining our immense talents and writing a parody piece as a group...something I had never done before (nor alvin either). Mer & Pip, of course, have been teaming up to write pieces for quite some time now. Merry suggested using "Benny & The Jets"...initially I resisted and made a mild pitch for "Penny Lane"...mainly because I know the song much better...I don't even have a copy of "Benny". But I was out-voted and once we started working with "Benny" I got fully caught up in the fun and flow of group writing...very new experience for me...I really enjoyed it. Anyway, on the drive home I started to play around with the event in my mind using "Penny Lane" and got this crazy idea...so, after all that to-do of this intro...here it is ~ ~ ~
To Denny's came four esteemed Author's who post to this site
Merry, Pippin, alvin rhodes, P Robinson
Shared a meal, then some laughs; was great fun
Until we were done...

After dinner Merry pulled out pen and paper clean
Said, "Let's combine our talents; write a parody"
It sounded like a good idea to me
But what happened next; it did vex

Merry said, "Here's my idea", to all us guys
"Benny and the Jets' should work just fine"
I sat and rolled my eyes
Heard Merry say "this is a perfect song, should bring some laughs"
And all the others thought that her idea was keen
And while I did not wish to appear mean
"Penny Lane", said me

[during instrumental section]

{Uh-uh}
{I don't like "Benny & the Jets"}
{was not my taste}
{I don't have the song}
{I thought it wrong}
{actually worked out well}
{came out swell}

"Penny Lane", I said, "It's perfect for this, guys
Structured just right and it rhymes"
The others rolled their eyes
Though we had finished dinner, we still had our supper plates
The waitress had not come around to take them 'way
Was tension mounting there; it was quite plain
And I was to blame

Then Merry scooped up mashed potatoes that were leftover
And Pippin found a piece of gristle from his beef
and alvin loaded up some eggs to heave
then they all took aim; here it came

Mashed potatoes hit my ears and eggs my eyes
Next, I was bombarded with French fries
A full-fledged food-fight

Had disdain for my idea; they did not like
Coup de grace; got hit by a cream pie
"Mer - good aim..."

~ ~ ~ [the end] ~ ~ ~
* PAMP = "Parody Author's Most Proficient", and also "Paul, alvin, Merry & Pippin"...our initials...pretty clever, huh?

alvin, you know what's kinda funny...I was holding this one up until Mer & Pip posted the "Benny & the Jets" parody we all co-authored...and hadn't noticed that it got posted about 3 or more weeks ago...I might not have ever seen it if someone hadn't made a late comment on it yesterday...and I happened to be going through the "Comments" thread...I don't do that a lot of days anymore. I could have sworn I checked the "Search" function and typed in that song title and then "Elton John" on a second search a few days ago...and nothing came up. Thanks!

You shoulda grabbed a hunk of mashed potatoes, stuck 'em in your cheeks, popped them out and gleefully muttered, "I'm a xit, get it?" Fun parody, and with complicated structure against a stringently paced tune.

I've never gotten into a food fight at Denny's. You know why? Because I always leave before the food arrives! Just because they're open 24 hours dones't mean I've got all night! Let this be a lesson to you, people: Never take a woman to Denny's on a date! Especially if she's four-foot-eleven, has pointed ears, wears a tiara and can shoot lightning bolts with her fingers! (Go ahead, look it up: There are no Denny's left in Wyoming.)

MP - are you sure the problem is with the restaurant? j/k - Fortunately for our little Writer's Group we were in absolutely no hurry whatsoever. In fact it was kind of amazing to me that they didn't try to kick us out...the place was nearly empty when we got there...I think it might have been around 7:00, but I can't remember exactly...but by the time we finally pulled up stakes it was after 11:00 as I recall...and the place was full of young people, maybe from the local college in Northridge. But the food wasn't bad...now, next issue...would I take a date there? Uh...no...and it's not because I'm all that "high-class" either...(there's plenty of folks, a lot of them women, that would be willing to testify to that...lol). But I would opt for someplace with a little more reserved ambience, like say, maybe a bowling alley - j/k, again...lol...Anyway, personally I think it's a great and dandy place to hold Parody Author Meeting's, since you wouldn't want to get those types of people in some place where is wasn't totally OK to laugh and hoot and talk loud and make really bad puns while talking at about a million miles a minute...next issue...Wyoming? You've got to be kiddin me, MP...I must say "no way" it's not OK, cause I don't do "Yippy-I-O-Kiy-Yay" ~ ~ ~ OH...yeah...Thanks!

Good one Paul ! I am sorry, I didn't realise you had missed the grand unveiling of the PAMP parody. 5's of course ! For the record, as you know, I had a great time with you all, specially with Merry, on my visit. The author's meeting was one of the highlights for me :)

Larry H., thanks...yeah, this one had me crackin' up as I was thinkin' it up, writing, even while editing before posting. Luke-Per, nobody's fault...no harm, no foul - I was just too pre-occupied at the time. I knew everyone really had a great time...nobody could fake that MUCH hilarity...lol...You know, I was looking forward to it and expected fun...but it turned out even better and way more fun that what I anticipated. And writing as a group was fun...it went amazingly well...lines came rather quickly...better lines formulated and subbed in right behind them...modifications...Now, editing later...well, I'm not sure how well 4 different folks could do that on a regular basis without ending up even more nutso that before...some people have some slack to fill in that category...not sure I do...lol...Kat - shucks, I do it ALL the time...have done a number of them, "I Cannot Pace This" (Dixie Chicks: "Wide-Open Spaces"), "I Need Two Syllables" (Fiona Apple: "Criminal")...this one...not sure if I have more or not...maybe...Thanks ~ ~ ~
