I did this bit of gallows (or maybe I should say gas chamber) humor at the suggestion of Red Ant, so don't forget to thank him for this too.
Dachau days...
Half my family has been blown away.
It's enough to make me say "Oy vey!"
Oh, how annoying, Dachau days.

Suddenly...
I'm a third the weight I used to be;
Think I lost two hundred pounds, or three.
This weight loss program's killing me!

Why they took my clothes? I don't know; they just won't say.
What did I do wrong? Must I don these Dachau grays?

Soon my lice problem will go away
If I take a shower, so they say.
I prefer lice; thanks anyway.

Where'd the others go? I don't know. Well, who can say?

And yes, I know the song was supposed to be "Death Camp Days," but I changed the title to "Dachau Days" because it scans better that way.

My first comment isn't meant as a slam to this parody--I commend you for remembering the suffering of others, at least that's what I figured you were doing with this. It's something that happened in history, and hopefully history won't repeat itself.

Knee-jerk self-righteous indignation aside, what I find tasteless is the idea (intended as irony, I suppose) of the narrator referring to the murder of his/her family in terms of them having been "blown away" , and then dismissing it as "a bummer". Also the "weight loss program" 'joke' is, to me, in poor taste.

Of course, the determination of what is and is not appropriate for the site is not my call, so I needn't have offered my 'opinion' on that particular issue.

Darkly sick. (much has been made about humor during the Holocaust, how some prisoners used humor to survive). This was so patently sick, it was funny. A very hesitant 555, just for the chutzpah. But I don't think I would want to read it again. (Offender, please don't make a habit of this topic).

Thanks much Offender. Yes, I did suggest this to him, HOWEVER it is something that I find despicable ( my original title ). I can play Devil's Advocate and argue points that I am firmly against or that even make me sick. As I said to him I could not even get past a working title, and on inthe00s.com if I were to come up with the whole parody I probably would get death threats for doing such a thing. I know TOS well but will not vote this at all.

Yes, I know your comments are sincere, Red Ant. Of course, this song is a kind of subtle homage to the Jews for their resilience in the face of relentless evil. In fact, Jewish comedians inspired nearly every joke in here (except for the joke about the "weight loss program" which came from an ancient Irish satirist similarly down on his luck). Context does make a difference: if I were a Jew myself, this song would probably seem a lot funnier coming from me. Still, I think it demonstrates what I meant when I mentioned one could draw a kind of "Charlie Brown" humor from this song. Another comparable example of this kind of tragicomedy is Rodney Dangerfield's schtick.

Just a tidbit: Dachau wasn't an extermination camp, and there were no gas chambers in Dachau. Most people hoarded in Dachau weren't Jews, but German sexual deviants and communists. Initially Dachau was a slave labour camp, but later Dachau became famous from medical experiments on human subjects. Most people who perished in Dachau (30,000 total) died from exhaustion, diseases, executions (hanging and shooting) and malnutrition.

5-1-4. Even sicker than my "Public Execution" but with no satirical protest intention. Well paced, but IMO this went off the limits of good taste. Helsinki U. of Tech songbook knows a song "Sonderkommando nach Dachau" rhymed to a well-known railway song tune. In my opinion, extremely bad taste.

I did check on Dachau's history before I posted this. It's true that the victims of Dachau were a mixed bag and the Jews were not the majority of its short-lived population. It's also true that most of the gas chambers there were used for fumigating clothes, and that most of the victims died from "extermination through work" and arbitrary shootings. (That is, they were "blown away.") However, this history indicates that there was at least one homicidal chamber complete with a fake shower there, and that the Nazis had been "testing" it shortly before the allies came marching in: http://www.holocaust-history.org/dachau-gas-chambers/ Hence, I felt the song fit the history closely enough.
