The Lyrics

I don't have as many parodies for basketball as for the other major sports. But after hearing "The Wreck of the John B" by Pete Seeger and the Weavers, the forerunner to the Beach Boys' version on the album "Pet Sounds," this came to mind.
We watched for the Hoops Doc J.
Who came from the ABA.
Around Nassau County he did roam.
Won Nets two crowns.
But had to skip town.
Well, the team was broke up.
He found a new home.

So soars up the Doc J man.
See Julius Erving slam.
Call him the Captain who's sure to slam the ball home.
Slam the ball home.
He's gonna slam the ball home.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, the rim is broke up.
He slams the ball home.

From foul line he did dunk.
Never did fake any funk.
But Nets had to sell him to get into NBA.
No way!
Philly's new chum.
Slams in the Spectrum.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, the rim is broke up.
He slams the ball home.

So soars up the Doc J man.
(Soars up the Doc J)
See Julius Erving slam.
(See Julius Erving)
Call him the Captain who's sure to slam the ball home.

Slam the ball home.
(Home, slam the ball home.)
He's gonna slam the ball home.
(Soars up the Doc J man.)
(Soars up the Doc J man.)
Well, the rim is broke up.
He slams the ball home.

The Sixers took on the Celts.
Got themselves some nasty welts.
Finally had to call on Moses Malone.

Bring the crown home.
Win in Lakers' dome.

This is the last crown
that Philly has won.
(Nine... teen... eighty... three... )

Parody's so good I won't even launch my rarely repressible rant re the ludicrousness of NBA "basketball." :-)

I grew up in PA watching the 70s and 80s Sixers with Dr J, Moses Malone, Darryl Dawkins, Mo Cheeks. Ya have to pronounce Julius as "jewl-yus" for pacing, but that's fine. 555

I remember when traveling, palming, and the other offenses that are now rife used to be called by the refs. Go Celtics!

I come upon a slip by John B. Sure, Dr. J traveled sometimes, but your Celtics have always been noted first and foremost for thuggery. Or have you forgotten Johnny Most's line, "Chamberlain stuck his eye in Russell's elbow!"
