I Am a Rock by Jeff “Dr Chordate” Moran

Cold temperature, solidifying magma.
Quartz and pumice,
Kimberlitic diamonds,
Basalt, granite, and
That volcanic glass obsidian.

I am a rock. I am igneous.

Talk of limestone, diatomite and flint.
Sandstone, chalk, chert, and coal
Small particles sink down,
With great pressure applied,
Accretions of creatures that have died.

I am a rock. Sedementary.

I’ve built walls, cathedrals great and mighty.
Polished marble blocks,
No need for other stones,
Not gneiss or schist or slate.
I’ve already changed from what I was.

I am a rock. I’m metamorphic.

I am in books geologists must read.
Hard or sometimes soft,
Often I’m exposed,
Or hidden ‘neath the dirt,
When you hit me hard sometimes it hurts.

I am a rock, geologically.

And a rock can feel the rain.
Igneous or sediment.
