Parody Song Title:

"Ground Round"

Parody Written by:

Adagio

The Lyrics

When you're at home and life is getting so hungry,
There's a meat you know,
Ground round.

You're in a hurry, but there's no need to scurry
It will help to know
Ground round.

Just mix it with some mac and cheese and you will look so witty
Add some Campbell's beef stock and your eatin' really nifty
"How can you lose?"

There is no way you can err.
Some of the recipes double, and go in the fridge, cook slow

Cook brown
All meals taste great for sure
Ground round.
Use any place that your
Ground's sound
Won't taste like leather of shoe

Just use some ground, recipe books abound, it's true
I've got all that prose
Writ down.

Simmer it slow
They won't make faces and so you
Know they won't yell gross
No frowns

Just put some meatloaf in a pan and heat it super-nova
Then enhance it with some brew, just don't get a hang-ovah
Bin-ging again

Delight in the better fare,
You can always use some truffles, it will add some flair, e'en tho

Ground round
You can use some egg white
Ground round
Make it an eye delight
Ground round
Welcome and eat the chow now.

And you may find a cookbook on the shelf to guide and help you,
Someone who cooks just like you and you can use their menu,
Meals for a song.

So then we can have a square
We can put meat with our noodles, forget all those airs
you know.

Ground round
Instant meal waiting for
Some brown
"Don't wait a minute more"
Chomp down
There's tacos waiting for you,
All brown
It will be great with your
Add ons
Then you can get some more
Wolf down
"Everything's waiting for you."

You must be the chief cook and bottle washer at your house. You always come up with some good kitchen stuff. This was a fun read. Well done!

Don't know how I missed this one...maybe that's because I've spent a lot of time on the messageboard lately. Anyway, excellent job; 5-5-5 is what I vote.

Been looking for this. Isn't it a Mad Magazine song? I remember everyone singing it in the early 70s.
Guy @ Andy - September 25, 2009 - Report this comment
It may very well be an old Mad Magazine parody from way back. I hope you are not pointing an accusing finger at plagiarism. I've known this author for over seven years even before we both started writing on this site and I can assure you that she would never resort to plagiarism. She has 231 parodies posted on this site and her first was on June 6, 2003. With that many parodies and for having been writing parody for this amount of time one would think that if there were any plagiarism it would have been detected by now. We have even collaborated on about 10 parodies and I am sure nothing was plagiarized then or now. So I just want to set the record straight before something gets blown out of shape that any similarity between this parody and anything that Mad Magazine put out has got to be purely coincidental. Please forgive me if my assumptions about your reasoning behind your comment is flawed, but Adagio is a friend and I don't wish to see her good name tarnished. Plagiarism has gotten several people banned from this site - so any hint of that is taken seriously by all the authors who write original parody. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that your comment is not a hint about plagiarism.

Thanks heaps, Guy! ;)

Besides Andy, I never read aforementioned periodical.

There was a Mad Magazine parody decades ago. I grew up with it. I know most of it from memory. This parody doesn't resemble it in any way, except that it says "Ground Round" instead of "Downtown." There is nothing about the parody here that suggests the writer ever even heard or read the Mad version.

I remember a parody we sang in Girl Scout camp; it may have been from Mad Magazine : When you eat meat but hete the meat that you're eating You will always know It's ground round. It's so unnerving when they're constantly serving you ground roun. It may be called chopped steak salisbury or beef patty. No matter what it's called it's always overcooked and fatty. What can you do? Call out to your waiter there Loudly pound on your table, stand up in your chair and sout "GROUND Round" Why are they serving me GROUND ROUND I'm sick and tired of GROUND ROUND ground round ground round... That's something like it went.

I remember that old Mad parody ... I used to know it off by heart but all I can recall now is : It's so unnerving when they're constantly serving in your eating spot - Mincedmeat. It may be in a rissole, or a hamburger or patty, Whatever form it's in it's always overcooked and fatty What can you dooooo? Complain to your waiter there And pound on the table Get up on your chair And shout Mincemeat Why must it always be Mincemeat What are you serving me Mincemeat ... mincemeat ... The UK version was edited so I guess mincemeat means ground beef. Here, mincemeat is the stuff in Xmas fare and it's dried fruit stuff!

In re Dorothy and Steve's, that's the one I remember, but it also ends with -Piled on my plate, I see GROUND ROUND, always they're hounding me, GROUND ROUND (then a little bit more)
RubyB - October 06, 2016 - Report this comment
I know Adagio did not plagiarize Mad Magazine because Mad magazine had different lyrics. Mad Magazine's parody of DownTown started out: "When you eat meat but you hate the meat you're eating, then you've sure got---Ground Round!"
Skep Tock - April 24, 2017 - Report this comment
This is from memory. I last saw this in the US version of MAD 50 years ago: When you eat meat and hate the meat you are eating you have surely got Ground Round Its so unnerving when they're constantly serving in an eating spot Ground Round It may be called ground steak a Salisbury or beef patty No matter what its called its always overcooked and fatty What can you do Sound off to your waiter there And pound on the table, stand up in your chair And yell "Ground Round" always you're serving me Ground Round, always unnerving me Ground Round Its always got to be Ground Round Etc...

I sang the Mad Magazine parody last year at a Funny fund raiser: When you eat meat but hate the meat that your eating, Then you've surely got ground round, It's so unnerving when they're constantly serving, In an eating spot ground round, Whenever they call it a sirloin a Salisbury or beef patty, Then you'll surely know that it is overcooked and fatty, What can you do Shout out to your waiter there And loudly pound on your table, Stand up on your chair, And yell ground round, Why are you serving me ground round, Lying on my plate I see ground round, Constantly conning me ground round.

Okay .. So, if you guys remember this way, as I do, why is it incorrect here on this site?
Fussbudget - November 05, 2019 - Report this comment
And why are you still arguing about it a decade later?
Willam Dunphy - May 26, 2021 - Report this comment
"When you eat meat But hate the meat that you're eating then you've surely got - Ground round! ..." ..."Then push back the table and stand on your chair, Scream at the waiter and everyone there, I've got ground round! Why are they feeding me Ground round?... [that's all the lyrics I am able to remember from the original hilarious Mad Magazine parody- prob mid to late 1960's] However unintentional/unconscious, the core idea - i.e. "Ground Round" to the tune of "Downtown" is overwhelmingly likely to have been inspired by Mad. I say "inspired rather than "plagiarized" because however derivative the concept, the content is ENTIRELY unrelated and original... AND clever!
