The Lyrics

Sorry - thought that doing all of today's six-way smoosh meant that the writing was finished for now. But then *this* just jumped in and started writing itself -- you know how *that* goes, right? -- and the homage is that among all six OS done today, this is TT's fave, for its bright, up-tempo, uplifting bounce. (OS video, title incorrect).

My smoosh has bits of folk songs, parts of Motown
Mary Wells' "My Guy"
My Bonnie's farther than the farthest ocean
Dad: so proud, am I
My smoosh is blighted by the mobster's star
Who crooned evy'ry heart to moosh
And there is not much in this world
I would rather do than smoosh

Something happened to my life the day that I found AIR
Outlet that I'd never had before
'Stead of always bugging those who for my songs, don't care
I found a crowd who, parody, adore

My smoosh is tempting as Detroit's Temptations
Singing of "My Girl"
Attempting: try my own originations
Giving it a whirl
My smoosh is brightened by Brit's brightest star
"Amour", "Liebe", sang thereof
Pet pleased all nations of this world
Plus "amore": four-way love   [1]

Once I thought that no one liked my parodies: what a shame!
When I sang, they all would run away
Now I've lots of company: these songs, our fav'rite game
And now I've posted seven more today

My smoosh has "My Girl" changing clouds to sunshine
Warm as spring in May
My smoosh has live clips from "The Donna Reed Show"™
T-V of its day
Some think the turtle to be quite bizarre
Some call TT "bag of douche"
But there are few things in this world
Quite as fun as six-way smoosh

My smoosh has six songs mashed up all together
Mixing tunes and text
All "clean"?! Comes creeping in, the creepy notion:
Turtle got de-sexed?
His mind is twisted; czome czee czatire czar
Who leaves readers oft perplexed
But there's just one thing to be done:
See tomorrow: what ... comes ... next!

[1] Petula Clark recorded and performed in multiple languages while touring internationally, e. g., doing her songs in both English and German in live concerts in Germany, to screaming, adoring fans. Her signature song, "Downtown", was recorded in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. British songwriter Tony Hatch, born in Pinner, North London, said it was actually inspired by his visit to New York City.

Hatch wrote TOS "My Love" while flying from London to Los Angeles, where he had a scheduled recording session with Clark. Originally, Hatch had been occupied during the flight putting the finishing touches on another song: "The Life and Soul of the Party," which was to be Clark's next single. However, in casual conversation with the American sitting next to him, Hatch was advised that this song would be meaningless to the American public (*always* a cross-Pond issue here, LOL -- TT ;). Hatch proceeded to write a song whose title - "My Love" - could not conceivably present any comprehension issue. The lyrics were completed on the plane, and Hatch wrote the music soon after landing. In February 1966, "My Love" became Clark's second single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Clark the first British female to have two US #1 hits.

"My Love" was recorded in French, German, and Italian (the order of translations of "love" in the verse referred to here -- all German nouns are capitalized; hence "Liebe"), though not Spanish, AFAIK -- hence, only "four-way love", including English (vs. five for "Downtown"). It was also a #1 hit in Canada, a hit in Australia (#4), New Zealand (#6), Rhodesia (#1), South Africa (#6), and reached #13 in both the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. In Germany, "My Love" became a hit *first* in its original English version (#13), and then again when rendered in German. It, too, was also a hit in French and Italian. ... Is she good, or what?

Who the heck knows what that crazy turtle will do next?! ... Just have to wait until tomorrow (Thursday 4 Nov US) and czee!

You capture the fun of writing these songs, and the joy they bring to your readers. Not everyone I meet in person cares for some of the stuff I write. But the folks at AIR don't have to put up with my singing voice, such as it is. Not long ago I used my French language skills to track down a rare 45 rpm of Petula Clark singing "La Colline au Whisky". Which she later performed as "On the Path of Glory" in a famous duet with Harry Belafonte. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher all the lyrics, except, again, to tell it's not the same song in French.

Curioser and curiouser!!! Ok. what gives? :) YOU actually thought that someone didn't like your songs? Or was that just thrown in there? 5's

Patrick: Most things don't translate exactly across languages ... "Volare", by Domenico Modugno, was the only US #1 hit sung entirely in a foreign language (Italian). Bobby Rydell did an English version that was only vaguely related to the original lyrics and their meaning. Dean Martin combined bits of both, Ital and English. TT parodied it, with further commentary and a link to his own translation (not easy when one doesn't speak the language) here:

(Note: Somewhat PG- or PG-13-rated; I know you don't care for stuff that's too off-color. This is mild, I think.)
I can't sing, either. Thanks for v/c - "joy to readers" -- what all of us strive for -- thanks again.

Mark Scotti: Works for me!!! Thanks!

Belle: Many of us here have shared stories of how we've been writing parodies since we were kids or teens, but had no appreciative audience "Tlll There Was AIR". (yes, you may have that title switch - "Till There Was You".) Not all friends, family, etc. are into such things, so the Internet makes it possible to share them with those around the globe who are also into song parody.
Did that answer what gives, and satisfy the curiosity? .. Thanks for v/c.

To paraphrase JAB, you've put a 'hex' on smoosh! Love the things you did with this melody and the sextet in general. Fav line has to be: "His mind is twisted; czome czee czatire czar, Who leaves readers oft perplexed"! Who but ewe would come up twith that gem! Once again you come up smelling like ros__, er--petulas! Fives for six!

TJC: Having tried JAB's genre with "I Went To Hex From Two" (co-written with the string section of the orchiectomy - er, orchestrated effort), I gladly leave Screamin' Jay to said Master.
As for who could come up with it? Someone who loves alliteration, and is a bit czraczy to boot ... thanks for v/c! :-D (Not gonna link the "Hex" song; it wasn't one of our better productions.)

Old Man Ribber: My Laziness! (kidding! thanks as always for v/c, friend, and for going to the effort to stay with the theme - it was noticed and appreciated! :D )
