The Lyrics

Come and listen to some stories 'bout a year now dead
More daily fear, dare we let those fairies wed
And "thee" Sunday, was this really on the tube?
'Cause out from the set came poppin' a boob

Nip that is. Black Jug. Jackson Teat.

Well the next thing you know Red States are everywhere
Most folks said, "John, we don't like your hair."
And "Cal-lee-forn-ya", who once thought so lib'ra'ly
Put a groper in the house 'cause he gropes a Kennedy

Niece, that is. "Girlie Man." Movie star.

The BoSox won the Series, Babe's curse is now just lore
And as for Ronald Reagan, "well, ah," he isn't anymore
Lotsa folks objected 'bout a leashing by Lynn-die
And Martha's hangin' curtains in the pen-i-tent'a-ry.

Stewart, that is. Country Road, West Virginia.

Well now it's time to say goodby but what a year it's been
If not for Bill O'Reilly, would loofahs get such grins?
You're all invited to out all gays for acts "un-Pa'trot-ly"
Except if it's the daughter of Lynne and Dick Che-ney.

Elizabeth, that is. Les-bi-an , Re-pub-li-can.

Y'all Have a Happy New Year! Hear?

Nicely done, Robert.

Nice one Rob. Part of the first stanza sounds awfully familiar. Stealin' from yo'self, brilliant. Speaking of which, you make any more money on copy-right infringement lately?

Thanks all. 2nz - How the hell are ya? We should all go drinking again. Guess I never told the ending to "The Ballad of Janet Jackson" - got a nice little settlement, a licensing agreement dated the day of the infringement (which my lawyer said was huge) and a copy of the performance. Oh, and "The Ballad of Janet Jackson" is now Registration Number PA 1-235-180. Hope you had a good holiday. bob

Well done, Robert. Two of your 5 verses dealt with gay issues, and my impression of 2004 is not that 40% of it involved gay issues. But, of course, the part of the purpose of parodies is to take things out of context and find humor in them, and this parody does very well at that. Your copyright infringement story sounds interesting and pertinent. Please share the full story.

Well done, Robert. Four of your 21 lines dealt with gay issues, and my impression of 2004 is that at least 19% of it involved gay issues. (Consider that one of the biggest issues of 2004 was the 2004 elections, and one of the biggest issues of the 2004 elections was the religious right's* freakish insistence on constitutionalizing homophobia.) But, of course, part of the purpose of parodies is to put such things into context while finding humor in them, and this parody does very well at that.

*Best oxymoron of the year: "religious right"

Well done, Gnome. Your comment is a very good parody of my comment. I do not agree that making a constitutional amendment out of the Defense of Marriage Act is homophobia, but I do agree that such an amendment falls outside the scope of what government should be doing. And as someone who is religious and identifies more with the right than the left, I think you are overstating the impact of gay issues on the 2004 election.

But when you are implying that this is only an issue of the religious right, please remember that when the Defense of Marriage Act passed in 1996, the House vote was 342 to 67, the Senate vote was 85 to 14, and it was signed into law by President Clinton.

"Overstating the impact of gay issues on the 2004 election"? Exit polls indicated that the most important issue to Bush voters was "moral values." "Moral values" is simply an Orwellian euphemism for homophobia.

I counted only three references (lines) which dealt with gay issues. (Dick Cheney's daughter is off limits).

John and Gnome - thanks for the comments. John, if you run a search of the "Ballad of Janet Jackson" in google, the last entry is a word document from an organization. Basically, I granted a performance license after the performance of the parody. Thanks again, bob
