The Lyrics

The Mermaid Manatee by Jeffrey Moran

We come on the Sloop John B, me and my manatee.
She was the loveliest thing I’ve ever seen.
A mermaid all right,
A beautiful sight.
I couldn’t resist her siren song of the sea.

She stood about nine feet tall, twelve hundred pounds in all,
Reclining in the shallow water off a West Indies isle.
Almost no teeth,
Six above and beneath.
A vascularized cornea and a paddle-shaped tail.

A simple stomach like a horse. But a large caecum, of course.
And intestines about fifty yards long.
Twelve hours of sleep.
Twelve hours of eat.
An idyllic life until motor boats came along.

She breeds once every two years, and that time is coming near.
And twelve months later, a manatee calf will appear
She’s a sea cow,
But my mermaid now.
And the things she could do with that prehensile upper lip.
That’s what made this the very best trip.
Yes, I know I never have been on a better trip.

So, we come on the Sloop John B, me and my manatee.
She was the loveliest thing I’ve ever seen.
A mermaid all right,
A beautiful sight.
I couldn’t resist her siren song of the sea.

Pacing not perfect, but that's a difficult chore given all else you've achieved. Singable, subtly sassy with great topic. How did you get your 'petite-ami' to stand so you could measure her height?

Some very good song surgery here, Dr. I visited your website, very interesting, and an Incredible resume, are you just one person?. Also enjoyed reading some of your other parodies on the site. "Ain't Nuthin' But A Groundhog", and others. I like your style.

A friend of mine had a cookbook from the 1940's, and, believe it or not, there was a recipe for manatee.
