The Lyrics

Scene 2

(Maria is surrounded by six children, ranging in age from 5 to 16.)

Maria: So what do you like to do?

Kid 1: Play video games

Kid 2: Watch TV.

Kid 3: Binge and purge.

Maria: How about singing?

All: We don't know how to sing.

Maria: Why not?

Kid 6 (the eldest): Because our school had to cut its sports, drama, and music program to try to balance the school budget.

Maria: That figures. Well, I've got a little shortcut that will help. (Sings)

Let's start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
When you read you begin with - A - B - C
When you sing you begin with DO - RE - MI
DO - RE - MI , DO - RE - MI
The first three notes just happen to be DO - RE - MI
DO - RE - MI
DO - RE - MI - FA - SO - LA - TI...

(Oh let's see if I can make this easier)

Do: You need lots to live here
Re?: The smog blocks out the sun
Mi: Narcisists with their cells
Fa: Down; once were number 1
Sol: The fish are laced with lead
L.A.: A place that has no soul
Ti: One crop not in the red
Bring us back good times and do-o-o-o-o.

Got it?

All: No!

Maria: Well, practice.

I think it's a powerful statement about something that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but America still loves you.

To paraphrase William Hurt in "Body Heat": "Stupid, pathetic. . .I got 'em all."

Forget my previous message. Upon reflection, I can't rebut much of the criticism. Context would have made the piece coherent. Knowing that, I should have provided some. Your comments point out contextual need. On future efforts of this type, I'll more fully frame things. Until then, thanks again.
