Original Song Title:

"My Favorite Things"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Julie Andrews

Parody Song Title:

"A Few Things I've Seen In My Time"

Parody Written by:

Stuart McArthur

The Lyrics

Is it just me, or does this sort of thing happen to everyone?

Blackjack fanatics in matches in attics
Fatcat asthmatics' distracting theatrics
Back-packing pack-rats in East Anaheim
These are a few things I've seen in my time

Back-slapping activists napping on mattresses
Actors on tractors attracted to actresses
Brats in cravats crashing Cadillac cars
These are some things I have seen in the past

Jacketed jackals in shackles with Dracula
Burt Bacharach in a Latin spectacular
Packets of spatulas scattered at crimes
These are a few things I see time to time

and the nice thing
'bout these sightings
over my life-time
is not that they might
be unusual sights
but that they all kind
of rhyme

African factories packaging batteries
Acrobats patting their fractured anatomies
Fantastic elastic gymnastic men
These are a few things I see now and then

Platters of schnapper in batter in Africa
Chattering bats with protracted sciatica
Cattle that battle Seattle's canines
These are some more things I've seen time to time

Fat apparatchiks as taxicab passengers
Black-adidas'd chicks attacking Kim Basinger
Tap-dancing bachelors (quite unrefined)
These are a few things I've happened to find

And the mad thing
'bout these happ'nings
I see all the time
is not, like I said,
they're unlikely events,
but that they all kind...
of
rhyme

Writing this one would have been a major pain in the assonance. You could slaughter an Eminem song doing this kinda stuff. 555

alvin, you got it in one - I was trying to do a Dr Seuss. Unfortunately it meant I had to use a lame too-cute tie-together with the "they-all-rhyme"-subplot, but I couldn't think of anything else :-(.....and thanks

to the syllable-counting pacing 3-voter: yes, technically you're correct with lines 1 and 2 in each of the verses 2-6 - but I deliberately used a second trailing unstresssed syllable for those lines so it would have that Dr Seuss 3/4 time waltzy feel, and chug along rhythmically like his stuff always does - more fun for the reader

thanks Royce - the dictionary sure did get a work-out

thanks AFW, Johnny D, Y.A.D. carol and Rick C :-)

thanks Luke - yes assonance courtesy of the letter "a" (hmm, should've tried to slip that one in - oh well)

thanks MrMac, and LOL :-)

Very well constructed, Stuart. I used to live in East Anaheim and recall a few back-packing pack rats.

surely they're the same ones, John! - I mean how many could there be?

Reading the latest song by Stu McArthur... laughed 'till I puked you may call me McBarfer... It ain't just this one it happens most times...This is a parody writer sublime. Fives don't do this justice, so I'm gonna ten it. The work that obviously went into this one paid off in a big way, Stu. And just what I expect from one of the best around. Keep 'em comin', mate.

Dee! - welcome back to the comments board! hope things have eased up a little in Louisianna, enough for all your half-finished parodies to start coming into full bloom - looking forward to the final output - and thanks for the 5s!

Well, I was gonna say I don't think there is any such place as East Anaheim - but John screwed THAT up - ha ha. Great job Stu.
stuart mcarthur - November 07, 2005 - Report this comment
thanks, Merry - I was as surprised as you, but I think I covered up well...I guess it's just north of South-East Anaheim

(ABC4) Easily one of the most random ones by you, and random parodies = awesome, at least in my books.
Agrimorfee - November 13, 2007 - Report this comment
(ABC4) In any other contest, the offputting pace would be a point deduction, but you can't do that here, there's just so much showmanship here that negates it.

How the hell did I miss this one? Back when we were discussing rhyming on the messageboard, I wondered where you got your "African factories packaging batteries Acrobats patting their fractured anatomies" example from: it sounded very Luke Brattoni-ish. Crazy and inspired work here, mate, even if I am two years late in seeing it. 555.

I missed this one as well, awesome parody of a great song. Really enjoyed this...
Below Average Dave (badave.com) - November 14, 2007 - Report this comment
I guess I did too, it was pretty random, but random is very fun and it's always a strong contender when it comes from STU
Cat - November 14, 2007 - Report this comment
(ABC) Wonderfully wacky wordplay! I always love parodies like this—although you'd need a VERY thick accent to make "cars" and "past" rhyme, where I'm from! =P Oh well. Super job!

ABC- Absolutely love the random wackiness and rhyming in this one. Very funny and well done, Stu!
