The Lyrics

The Halloween decorations were on the shelf by August this year. Last week I was in a Dollar Tree store. A customer asked the clerk about Thanksgiving decorations and was told they had already been pulled to make way for Christmas items. What used to be a day of family fun and remembrance is just one more overhyped excuse to go shopping.
We're beginning to overlook Thanksgiving
Shopping we will go
Wait in line at the local mall, customers starting to brawl
The traffic on the lot is moving slow

We've begun to forget about Thanksgiving
Former holiday
Now the happiest sight we'll see, the discount prices will be
Take six months to pay

A pair of steel toe-cap boots and a pistol that shoots
Assure you a place in the line
Get ready to pounce, and soon you'll announce
"Hands off! That last smart phone is mine".
On Cyber Monday you could buy that phone for less online

We've forgotten about the Pilgrim Fathers
Giving thanks to God
A story we once knew so well, one we no longer tell
Of guys in buckle shoes with hats quite odd

We'd sit down for a family meal, Thanksgiving
Happy, young and old
Now we barely have time to eat, deadlines we have to meet
Before it gets sold

Just a couple more shopping weeks 'til Christmas
Find that toy, brand new
Celebrating the Savior's birth, singing about peace on Earth
We forgot that, too
We've forgotten about the Christmas message: Family, Friendship, Giving, Christmas!

This makes me sad, as Thanksgiving is my favorite meal of the year. Our new Christmas tree waits till Friday. Good work.

^ my favorite meal, too! so, no running around to these sales, for me. I'll be perfectly contented, stuffing my face, with the fam! 5s

Nice job -- agree with the sentiment but admit that I'm torn about the whole Black Friday starts on Thanksgiving now thing. Because after we eat all the women leave to go shopping and the guys get to watch football, which NEVER USED TO HAPPEN. So...yeah, I'm adjusting. Also the sooner the Christmas cues begin, the more procrastinating I get to do so that's a win as well. Anyway, good stuff.

Thanksgiving used to get a lot more attention than it does now. Stores used to be closed so employees could spend time with their families. Now they have to work to accommodate the shoppers. Halloween, a holiday that used to be about one evening, has been stretched to over two months. Last year, one of my local TV stations began broadcasting round the clock Christmas music from Thanksgiving through the first week of January. The best tune was "In Dulci Jubilo" by Mike Oldfield. They didn't play that one very often. Wonder what they are going to do this year. Glad some of my readers can relate to my sentiments on the subject.

I particularly like the pacing in the first couple of stanzas. I do find it sad that we keep chipping away at days when all shops are closed and everyone can be with their families, other than essential services like hospital workers and first responders.
