The Lyrics

After nationalizing Venezuela's oil and electricity and setting his greedy sights on its banking system, Hugo Chavez is doing "land reform" like what failed in Cuba, South Africa and elsewhere. I have tried to be serious! See original words at http://www.allthelyrics.com/song/169245/
Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha, he take me rancho to run Venezuela.
Hey! Once again now!
Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha, he take me rancho to run Venezuela.

Five thousand acres, friends, I lost;
That man even take me cow and horse!
Heya! Hugo Cha, he take me livestock to run Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Hugo Cha,) Sing out the chorus,
(Hugo Cha,) Sing a little louder,
Hugo Cha, he take me barnyard to run Venezuela.
Once again now!
(Hugo Cha,) Going 'round the border,
(Hugo Cha,) Nothing left for us,
Hugo Cha, he take me rancho to run Venezuela.

Well, the rancho did supply me house and lan';
Then he got socialist plan,
A-hey, ah!
Hugo Cha, he gave to poor folks to feed Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,)
Hugo Cha, he save for greenhorns to feed Venezuela.
Once again now!
(Hugo Cha,) he'll compound disorder, (Hugo Cha,)
Hugo Cha, he slave soft townies to feed Venezuela.

Well, the money was just inherited,
Stuck-up rich old fellow bequeathed; he dead.
Don't you know,
Hugo Cha, he found me checkbook and...
Everybody...
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,)
Hugo Cha, he take me bank branch by gun Venezuela.
Once again now!
(Hugo Cha,) Zoom! unlock me strong box,
(Hugo Cha,) Sting me until I totter,
Hugo Cha, he wake me banker to dun Venezuela.
Women over forty?
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,)
Hugo Cha, he make me broker to shun Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Hugo Cha,) Goons found money order,
(Hugo Cha,) Spin me like a potter,
Hugo Cha, he fake not funny, no fun Venezuela.

Well, me friends, never to farm again,
All me hard work gone in vain!
Uh, heya...
Hugo Cha, he take me tractors to run Venezuela.
Everybody!
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,) Boom! lock-stock-and-barrel!
Hugo Cha, he take me silos to run Venezuela.
Sing a little softer!
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,)
Hugo Cha, forsake me know-how to run Venezuela.
EVERYBODY!
(Hugo Cha, Hugo Cha,) Sing out the chorus!
Hugo Cha, he take me property; done Venezuela.
Ha-ha, I got Cha!

The singer of the OS might have some appreciation for the way that Chavez and Castro are making all of their citizens (except for themselves) equally poor, but I don’t. Well done, Barry.

It's good and funny and I agree with what you're saying, but one stylistic change is in order: "Hugo Cha" paces the original but doesn't quite flow so well. Try calling the dastardly dictator of Venezuela "Pa Chavez" in the tradition of referring to Joseph Stalin as "Uncle Joe" and you'll get where you're trying to get with this one.

JJ: You really caught the irony here. The OSer might change 'Women over forty' to 'White men who are portly', but I would say 'Wise men leaving shortly'. AC: Thanks, but I made the name end in 'a' like Matilda. Try these global replacements: Fidel Ca in island Cuba, Nelson Ma in South Africa, Idi A in free Uganda.

Great job as always, Barry. I used to love all of Belafonte's work "back then;" it's sad to think that nowadays he probably thinks of Hugo as a hero.
