When I was in grade school there was a racist parody of the first verse of "Strangers in the Night" going around. Never did anything with it myself. The first time I saw DKTOS appended to one of my creations I didn't know what DKTOS meant. My preferences in music tend to run to the obscure. I try to check if anyone else has used a particular piece before I have a go at it, just to make sure I'm not just duplicating someone else's work. I noticed that I'm the first here to have used Bob Marley's "Kaya" and only the third to try "Free Electric Band" by Albert Hammond. Most songs after the 1980's don't register well enough with me to inspire anything. My real preference for music listening are instrumental themes. I won't listen to vocal versions of "Eye Level", "Scarlet O'Hara", or "Chariots of Fire" for fear I will lose the visualizations in my mind if I attach words to them. I haven't heard anyone mention "The Big Seven" lately. Is that still a feature here? Don't think anyone ever took up my challenge to do Bob Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts". I don't think I understand the original yet. Of course, there is always the ultimate musical nightmare: "Eve of Destruction", by Tiny Tim.

Loved the way you subbed "do bee do bee do", with "Jonas Bros who?" and beyond! I really listen to all kinds of music. I also YT OS as well. At 12, I've also had taste for country music and classical music (since I used to take piano lessons). It's all good! 555.

          TT usually saves readers the trouble of looking it up by providing a YT link for all but the most well-known, but all of us are pressed for time (Whatever happened to all that leisure that technology was supposed to bring us?), and realizes that most don't do so -- as I confess, I don't, either. Christie Marie M: I enjoy classical as well, and some (not all country). Can flipper around on the piano at a dilettante level, but *love* listening to good piano. I have a MIDI of "Love Story" that rips! ... when I was a teen, there was a girl next door who used to take piano lessons, and I'd sit and listen for hours as she practiced classical pieces. Personal opinion is that grammatically this one wasn't your best BUT it was very funny and to a song that I am pretty sure very few people can keep a straight face and say DKTOS. My mom sang a version of this in the car once "Strangers in the night, exchanging rubbers. . ." the rest is probably inappropriate for this site, but anywho. . .I loved it, particularly because DKTOS in a world with YouTube, AOL Music, Last.fm, and millions of other stream sites just isn't necessary anymore. And I love that title switch. . .5s

"Eve of Destruction" was written by P.F. Sloan, aged 19 at the time (1965). I believe the first recording was by (dramatic pause) "The Turtles". Every folk singer of the 1960's recorded it (except Bob Dylan, to whom it is sometimes falsely attributed). Every punk band today continues to record it. Tiny Tim's version runs a staggering 25 minutes, 49 seconds or thereabouts. In more prosperous times I paid $50 for the rare "Rock" CD in order to add this monstrosity to my collection of some 40 "EOD". Have versions in French, German, Italian, Danish. Wrestler/Governor Jesse Ventura recorded it. When it comes to written parodies, I tend to only look at those of songs I recognize. On the old Dr Demento show I would often hear parodies that would send me in search of the original. That would be good for the first writers and singers.

I follow the links when I have time (which isn't often); otherwise if I DKTOS but still wish to honor the writer, I comment but do not vote. When we were active in the contests back in the day (and we are getting back into that) it was/is a requirement to listen to the OS, so that one can vote properly. Because of that I have found a lot of gems among the more 'modern' songs that I otherwise would not have been aware of. Of all genres. And have added them to my MP3 collection. :)

Meriadoc: Same here on the time issue. I'm self-employed, and hence don't have the luxury of using my employer's time (and computer) to read and vote. There used to be time stamps on comments as well as date stamps, and it seems the majority of comments were posted during US work hours. Strange, eh? ... probably one reason for discontinuance of that.
    Agree on commenting on DKTOSs if you find the parody worthwhile on its own. The contest requirement mentioned is a major reason why TT has never entered contests. There would be a lot of DKTOS, and given the gap in age, tastes, etc., a lot of those I would not wish to hear. Also, the sheer time commitment of reading (and listening?) to all of the others was a barrier. Not competing here with anyone -- a nice comment is prize enough for moi. ;) ... and yes, I have some MP3s of fave tunes. (MP3 = Merry & Pippin, 3 Fives? xD )

Peregrin: Looks like we're all pretty much in agreement on the major topics. I'm afraid my batting average for trying someone's recommendation and liking it is not high. Perhaps a bit inflexible (it's that hard shell, lol), but taste is taste. And somewhere in the 1970s or so, it was no longer a requirement that "singers" actually had to be able to sing. :(
