The Lyrics

A palmetto is similar to a palm tree, and South Carolina is the Palmetto State. John Edwards was born there, but if he doesn't win the Primary, it's over for him. John McCain, who lost it in 2000 and thus lost the nomination, needs to win it as well, to keep his New Hampshire momentum going. Mike Huckabee also needs to win it, because it might be his last chance to appeal to the social conservatives. Neither Hillary nor Obama HAS to win South Carolina, but the loser of the two will need to make up a lot of ground.
As the votes fly
comes a bold and bright Chicago man
and for election he now will stand
in Palmetto.
(In Palmetto.)

And the women cry.
'Cause if there's one thing they'd love to see
it's Obama in the Presidency
in Palmetto.
(In Palmetto.)

Now, people don't you understand?
We choose who will lead this land.
'Cause we won't have Bush to kick around anymore one day.
Will it be Hillary?
John McCain or Huckabee?
Or Rudy Giuliani, no
they just won't vote that way...

Well, the press returns.
And the hungry reporters with the microphones
listen to Obama's dulcet tones
in Palmetto.
(In Palmetto!)

And the hunger burns.
And John Edwards gives a speech tonight
but his voter turnout will be light
in Palmetto.
(In Palmetto!)

Then one day, in desperation
the Ron Paul kids arrive.
The crash a speech
sticker a car.
Their man does run
but he don't get far...

And then Hillary cries.
But will it be for her long hard stand?
For defeat or a victory in hand
in Palmetto?
(In Palmetto?)

And as a soldier dies...
(In Iraq, no!)

On a cold, gray Carolina morn
we hope a new President will be born...

In Palmetto.
(In Palmetto.)
So, which of these guys?
(In Palmetto.)

(In Palmetto!)

(Oh-whoa!)
For the first time, I have to qualify that "guys" is a generic term, since one of the "guys" is not a guy.
