The Lyrics

The first two verses and chorus of this were emailed to me by a colleague who was aware of my interest (new at that time) in parodies. The fragment inspired me to write the rest.. It was the second parody I did and started me in a hobby!...Maybe it wont be allowed!I found out a long time later that there was a complete version written by the guys ( Sean Brady and Tom Kearney) who wrote the first two verses and chorus . It can be found at http://www.levitt.co.uk/techi.html.*the drain is the name given to a commuter train that runs between the main station in the financial district to a major commuter rail terminal..... it is called the drain for obvious reasons..
(A long, long week ago
I can still remember
how the market used to make me smile
What I'd so when I had the chance
is get myself a cash advance
and add another tech stock to the pile
But Alan Greenspan made me shiver
with every speech that he delivered
bad news on the rate front
still I'd take one more punt
I can't remember if I cried
when I heard about the CPI
I lost my fortune and my pride
the day the Nasdaq died

So bye bye to my piece of the pie
now I'm getting call for margin cos my cash account's dry
it's two weeks from a new all time high
and now we're right back where we were in July
we're right back where we were in July

Did you buy stocks you'd never heard of?
Q Com at 150 or above
Cos George Gilder told you so?
Now do you believe in Home Depot
Can Walmart save your portfolio
and can you teach me what's a p/e ratio?
Well I know that you were leveraged too
and you just cant take a long term view
your broker shut you down
no more margin could be found
I never worried on the whole way up
buying dotcoms from a pick up truck
but Friday I ran out of luck the day the Nasdaq died
I started singin)

chorus

now for two years we had a long bull run
we thought we'd found our place in the sun
but all good things just have to end
well the punters thought they had it made
with the cash they borrowed to do their trades
from the brokers who were so keen to lend
oh but as those prices rose so high
the storm clouds gathered in the sky
that bubble soon would burst
and the market would do its worst
and while the longs were laughing all the way
the shorts were plotting to make their play
in the end someone would have to pay
the day the nasdaq died
we were singing

chorus

like the hurricane of eighty seven
that index spiralled down from heaven
eight hundred points and falling fast
as it hit the floor we stared aghast
we saw our dreams of riches truly dashed
Once it again it seemed that nothing was forecast
in those smoke filled rooms rank with despair
the karaoke played a mournful air
we all got up to dance
oh but we never got the chance
because the wine bar landlord had called time
and the bouncers stood there in a line
how retribution was divine
the day the nasdaq died

we started singing

chorus

and way out there in cyberspace
our savings vanished without trace
and with no cash left to start again
I staggered off to catch the drain*
along pavements slick with falling rain
wondering have I got a pack of neurofen
sliding down the Bank to my Waterloo
and that long commute back home to you
overwhelmed with rage and guilt
hey at least no blood was spilt
as the train flew headlong down the track
I knew there was no turning back
I'd played and lost I had to face the fact
the day the Nasdaq died he was singing

chorus

I met a man who sang a country tune
of life and love and getting through
then he just smiled and turned away
I went down to Virgin Megastore
where I'd heard the music years before
but the man there said the music wouldn't play
on Oxford Street the hustlers stood
selling hot and counterfeited goods
but not a word was spoken
the cell phones all were broken
and the three things that have made me whole
the sex and drugs and rock and roll
not forgetting jazz and blues and soul
were still there when the Nasdaq died
and they were singing

chorus (original))

Two things: 1) You spelled my last name incorrectly. 2) I released the original in the 70s, not the 60s.

Hey Don, if you're gonna be a dick about pointless crap the least you could do is leave a vote. This was really well done; I enjoyed it a lot.

This was very well done. And those low rates are sorry for market shares. On the flipside it's a great time to invest in Real Estate.

Tough song to parody - very well done indeed. 5's

Excellent parody - maintains the mood of the original very well and makes some sense.

To Claude: why would I wanna vote on parodies of my own songs? Oh well, I think it was a good parody anyways, even if the person did put the wrong spelling and/or time frame. :)

Excellent job ... and I'm glad to see that my "original" parody helped inspire your hobby! Keep up the good work. By the way, the "official" site for Humble Pie (or "The Day the NASDAQ Died") is www.itulip.com.

Hi Martha, I found this website by Googling "The day the Nasdaq died", which I do every so often out of a mix of ego and curiousity : ) It's amazing how far and wide the song has spread (at least the first part). I originally just sent it to some friends who also got slammed in the market crash, and some of them e-mailed it around and pretty soon it started popping up in newspapers and websites. I'm really glad so many people enjoyed it, and I really enjoyed your verses. They are more visceral than mine. You should consider writing short stories. By the way, I lived in London when I wrote it, and I was also there in '87 during the hurricane.

Hi Sean Hi Sean Yes it certainly did the rounds I got it from an editor from a firm of legal publishers but it had gone to him via several investment banks in London.... I was in London in 87 also... the hurricane and the market crash that followed were strange times..I was working for the derivatives market regulator at the time but slept right through the hurricane .. the house I was staying in at the time belonged to a musician friend of mine and was fantastically well sound proofed ....was quite surprised at the devastation the next day.... are you living the the US now?

(ABC-A) Well this one is surely fiscally fit. Nice job Martha.

(ABC) I had to dock you on overall, since part of this parody is not your own original work, but the parts you did write are well done.

(ABC05) For a 2nd parody, this was pretty damned good (esp. for tackling American Pie--that song is so played out, I don't think i will ever attempt it). You always have a certain intelligent quality in the works I have read from you.

abc- that is sensational, Martha - the only one left smiling was Warren Buffet - our market has had a great 2 years, and is definitely "in the sun" - I haven't had a margin call in all that time - clouds must be on the horizon - 555
