Song Parodies -> "Scythes By Side"

Original Song Title:

"Side By Side"

Original Performer:

Dean Martin

Parody Song Title:

"Scythes By Side"

Parody Written by:

Old Man Ribber

The Lyrics

Sometimes when a parodist stumbles upon a fantastic title, the song writes itself. My take is a duet by Old Father Time and The Grim Reaper. They actually have much in common. Both are mythological characters, both wear distinct if archaic costumes, and each carries...a SCYTHE! As for the original song, the question is not who performed this but rather who HASN'T. While I'm using the 1966 Dean Martin recording, other memorable versions include those by Kay Starr, Ray Charles, Bill Haley, The Puppini Sisters, and even Cliff "Ukelele Ike" Edwards (who was also the voice of Jiminy Cricket). ;D

(Note: FT indicates solo lines by Old Father Time, GR is The Grim Reaper, and B is both.)

(B) Oh we both come from legend and fable.
We're old but we're both still able.
(FT) I can make the time fly.
(GR) I make you die.
(B) Scythes by side.
One of us is the the master time keeper.
One is the dreaded Grim Reaper.
(GR) My old pal counts the days.
(FT) My buddy slays.
(B) Scythes by side.

(FT) Eons or one second
It's all the same to me.
(GR) 'Til the day that I have reconked.
One swing and mor-tal-i-ty!

(FT) I wear robes with immaculate "white-ning".
(GR) I wear the black and I'm "fright-ning".
(B) We're a pair of old fools
Swinging our tools,
Scythes by side.

(Instrumental break - bridge to final phrase)

(FT) I can make all your moments seem fleeting
(GR) I stop your ticker from beating.
(B) But we both are, you'll find,
Two of a kind.
Scythes.....by.....side!

And so the two of them will go on...until the government outlaws and confiscates all "scythe arms". ;D

Cute idea - did you ever see the early 60s 'Boris Karloff's "Thriller'" ' episode where there was a painting of the Grim Reaper that came to life. It scared the Beejeezuz out of me when I was a kid. As I recall, William Shatner got his comeuppance, in his pre-Trek days. As you've been one-bombed, I'll boost your average. Oh, and because it's good stuff too, lol.

@AFW: Scythes are sickeningly scathing on thick thistles.

Two, three, four...! Another singalong-fun masterpiece, Ribber. So many funny lines (I tried sooo hard not to snigger like Beavis and Butthead at the line 'swinging our tools'... but I failed. Bad girl!) Uno-bomber's been a bit busy today, I notice... can't be a lot going on his life right now.. I'm giving this a 555, so there! ;^)
