The Lyrics

During WW2, few nations had any decent helicopters except Germany and the US. Germany was first with a gyrocopter aboard the Type VIIC U-boats (Fa-330) and then by '42 had Flettner 282 spotters aboard several ships, including the Köln. The helo was powered by a 160 hp BMW Bramo Sh-14A with intermeshing rotors. Pilot sat up front with spotter to the rear. Altitude was excellent at 11,000 ft with a range of 200 miles at nearly 100 mph max. speed. The 282 served in the Med and Aegean with the Kriegsmarine but also served on land as a transport with Luft-Transportstaffel 40. Soon Flettner was experimenting with an up-armored version that would have wing-mounted MGs and possibly the new 55mm R4M rockets as well as the ability to carry a single SC bomb of 500 kg ventrally. In 1944 an order was placed for 1000 but Allied bombers destroyed both facilities so that just a few prototypes could continue. This was the Fl-282C version. Several were armored but the armament was not fitted and none saw action. They were, however, captured by the US Army and brought home for evaluation. This led to the US gunships that saw action in Vietnam. Hard to believe it took the US two decades to field a gunship when the Germans could have had them in 1945. Fl-282 was called the Kolibri or "Hummingbird."
Flettner’s first gunship
Flettner’s first gunship

It had intermeshing rotors. Served Hitler’s Kriegsmarine
Speed was 93 (mph)
First a transport, then a spotter onboard the Köln performing recon duties
Soon, there were 20 at sea

The 2-8-2 turned armed version C

Order for 1000 to be built
Was a tough request to meet
Allied bombers destroyed facilities:
Defeat

Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Could carry one bomb, small SC
Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Remained a pre-production machine under tight security
Oh why, oh why, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh why, oh why
No production series?
Doenitz did sigh, oh, oh, oh, oh, his ships denied

Army came and took it away. End of story
Made Flettner angry
German attack helo at sea could have found some glory
Made maritime history…

Unarmed bandit patrolled Med and Aegean skies
Spotter to the rear while armament was absent, denied
11k for helo was high
The Flettner 2-8-2 was an excellent spy

Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Could carry one bomb, small SC
Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Remained a pre-production machine under tight security
Oh why, oh why, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh why, oh why
No production series?
Doenitz did sigh, oh, oh, oh, oh, his ships denied

Though the order wasn‘t met, for gunships- paved the way
Before the Huey ever saw the light of day

Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Could carry one bomb, small SC
Flettner’s first gunship, armored and mounting MGs
Remained a pre-production machine under tight security
Oh why, oh why, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh why, oh why
No production series?
Doenitz did sigh, oh, oh, oh, oh, his ships denied
