Parody of a parody X38! This one dedicated to the Luftwaffe's jet mechanics- the Blackbirds. They were called this due to their black mechanic overalls. They serviced the Me-262 jet and did it knowing full well that the war was lost and their efforts futile in the face of Allied airpower and the battlefront situation. They found ways to extend the life of the early Jumo jet engines by using synthetic parts and lubricants. They modified the synthetic fuel mixes too. They plugged holes and repaired fuselage damage while under bombardment. They didn't care b/c the Schwalbe (Swallow) was their baby. They called it the "Turbo" due to the turbine engines and some called it the "Shark" because of its nose profile and upper MK-108 cannon wells that looked like eyes. Blackbirds were Luftwaffe and refused to work with the SS when new underground facilities were becoming available. Those mechanics that worked on the second German jet fighter, the He-162, were not called Blackbirds as they worked on the BMW 003 engine and that program was taken over by the SS as well. The 262 drivers lives depended on the Blackbirds to some extent b/c of the engine tech. A well-tuned Jumo was less likely to flame-out and could outrun any Allied fighter in straightline acceleration. Therfore, the engines needed to be running smoothly and efficiently. The Blackbirds made it so. Engine life gradually improved from 10 hrs to over 25 hrs by May 1945.
