Second LT. Hiroo Onada died on January 16, 2014. After surrender, he had moved to Brazil, married, and worked with Cattle. Was paid back pay by Japan but donated it to the Yasukuni Shrine. Supported a movement to restore Japan back to Imperial greatness. Could not understand the postwar younger generation and lack of honor. Only Teruo Nakamura held out for longer surrendering in Indonesia on December 18, 1974.

Note: Kozuka killed in 1972 in police shoot-out, leaving Onada isolated. Could not work him into the lyrics due to space restriction.

Sorry I missed this when you posted it. I read Onada's book. That man was truly devoted to duty. It was fortunate his sergeant was still living to be able to tell him that the war was over and his mission accomplished. I heard there were two other Japanese soldiers who fought with a communist insurgent army in Malaysia or Burma. They were fully aware the war had ended but volunteered to join the insurgency. Thanks for the update on Onada's life after the jungle.

I have Onada's book as well as a wide range of war biographies. My favorite is "MiG Pilot" by LT. Belenko on his defection with the MiG-25 Foxbat.

Side note on the MiG-25 Foxbat that was followed up by the MiG-31 Foxhound. Since MiG failed to sell the 1.42/1.44 MFI (MiG-39), it has since taken a back seat to Sukhoi family based on the initial Su-27 Flanker leading up to the PAK FA and Bomber PAK DA. MiG has regrouped with a UCAV called Skat (Skate) and the MiG-41 Foxhunter which will be a Mach 4.3 interceptor using new metallurgy and with hypersonic missiles operating off a massive AESA.
