The Lyrics

The selection originally titled "Low," written and composed by Harry James--no, not THAT Harry James, not the big-band leader--for Kelly Clarkson, read like a complaint when I translated the lyrics. I wondered, "What if I was addressing it to someone who had despaired of finding love and had lost all hope? What if, as the narrator, I was then OFFERING hope AND love to someone who might have never known either?" And I proceeded from there.
You’re all alone and friendless
At least that’s how it seems
You look at me with sad eyes it’s like you’re trapped inside a dream
You radiate your misery
And I can feel the flames
But I will not allow you to drown yourself in your shame
Well all I have to ask is just one question

Tell me
Have you ever been loved
How do you know what the meaning of love is
I know you live in fear
Of being all alone
But by the stars above
I swear you will be loved

Your suffering’s an acid
And it’s eroding you
But I intend to heal your wounds with all I do
And I mean “Yes” to be your answer next time you’re asked

Have you ever been loved
How do you know what the meaning of love is
I know you live in fear
Of being all alone
But by the stars above
I swear you will be loved

Just hold my hand and I’ll take you
To a much better place
Where we’ll spend our days together
Leading lives at an easier pace
Wait and see
Because finally you will be free
Free

Have you ever been loved
How do you know what the meaning of love is
I know you live in fear
Of being all alone
But by the stars above
I swear you will be loved

Have you ever been loved
How do you know what the meaning of love is
I know you live in fear
Of being all alone
But by the stars above
I swear you will be loved

Have you ever been loved
Well I mean to show you what the meaning of love is
I swear you will be loved
The inspiration also came from the mondegreen "Have you ever been LOVED" for the lyrics line "Have you ever been LOW" in the original.
