The Lyrics

Sinn Fein!

Hear them sing out an Irish refrain
Drinking down without any goddamn shame (Ai!)
A game, March 17 always the same
What a whole bunch of malarkey (Ai!)
Wear green, the company dropped dress codes today

This holiday’s dif’rent from all the other kinds
The one that lets us get blitzed out of our minds
St. Patrick’s Day!

Hear The Pogues pounding out their rhymes
And shite The Rovers are now pressed for time (Ai!)
And Flogging Molly’s on the ailing side
Can I get another slainte! (Slainte!)
Time to down another pint or two, or ten (Ai!)
I gag, a drastic drag, not a compliment

Irish you say, but I’m really quite surprised
I see Raoul and Jose blink their wild Irish eyes!
St. Patrick’s Day!

(The representative for New Hibernia has the floor…)

St. Pat was no resident Gaelic
Step away from your push for Lent
Didn’t bless no sacred shamrocks
Where has your four-leaf clover went?
Wang dang, behind smoky glass, lad
Killed all the snakes? I don’t agree
Do admire the land of Eire
‘Cause there St. Pat’s not a party!
Just ‘cause, just ‘cause
It’s just not their cause, yeah!

So you can binge all night with all those crazy guys
But in the morning have regrets, is that wise?
Go wear the green and fill your lake with color dyes
Go hang with Bono and the ghost of James Joyce!
And damn your eyes, St. Patrick’s Day!!
Copyright, 2018 Agrimorfee. Pogue mahone. (NOTES: "slainte", properly spelled with an accent over the a, is pronounced "slan-zheh" and means "health"--often toasted before imbibing liquor. "Sinn Fein" is the Irish Republican Party, Gaelic words meaning roughly "ourselves alone". "New Hibernia" is a virtual Cybernations country I discovered in a Google search [http://cybernations.wikia.com/wiki/New_Hibernia] in a fit of inspiration and serendipity. Per wiki, Saint Patrick was indeed not a native Irishman--it is believed he was born in what was then Roman Britain.)

Going straight to the heart of the Green Day challenge Ag, with St Pat’s day itself in your sights. Not much that’s Irish missed the cut here, although a nip of Irish cream’d go down well, t’be sure. 555

Great ripping into everybody who uses Saint Patrick's Day as an excuse to drink beer and wear green. I thought that use of Mexican names was especially funny here. Obviously, I also loved the name dropping of Flogging Molly.

I felt like some was missing between line four and five, but who cares - I haven't learned this much Irish English since I read about the Iron Druid (have to get back into that series one day, or maybe I'll just wait for the inevitable movie).

A good synopsis of most things Irish, Agri. Have to admit I first thought New Hibernia was a weird reference to a newly-formed Edinburgh football team, but then I realised my mind had skipped across the Irish Sea.

I love how the Americans make such a big deal of St Paddy's....everyone in the country's seems to be part-Irish for a day. This is a great rewrite of a pretty tricky OS. Obair mhaith! 555

I loved the name-dropping of The Pogues (doesn't "Pogue mahone" mean "kiss my ass"? Thought I read that somewhere). Anyway, great stuff - I too liked the Jose and Raoul part, and the perfect fit of the "just cause" part. Well done!

A nice send up for the holiday! And the Irish...Irish I had thought of some of these :)

Just kidding. "Step away from your push for Lent," indeed. Know what I gave up for Lent this year? Moderation. Just kidding. I wish. Anywho. Loved how you crammed so many Irish (and faux-Irish) references into a single Green Day song about a single green day. I hope it's at least another year before I see the ghost of James Joyce again.
