The Lyrics

A little song reflecting on what Detroit was doing in model year 1979 -- and the public's reaction to it then and now.
Woo Hoo Hooooo!

Woo Hoo Hooooo!

We used to spare the wall
And not crash test at all
20 cars a day
Were painted silver-gray
Today we like more doors
Back then was two, not four
Gas crisis in the past
Muscle cars didn't last

He was gonna buy a Buick
Bought instead a Pontiac
Really had his eyes set on
A baby-blue Cadillac
The car we called the 'Vette now could be a Chevette
Look at the past and cry
But it's gon-na be
Alright!

The Ford Fairmont, Granada
S.U.V. meant nada
There was Versailles and Caprice
The Gremlin gone from AMC
And kids then in high school
Who drove Pintos were uncool
The model year I've implied
Was 19, 19, 1979

Woo Hoo Hooooo!
(1979)
Woo Hoo Hooooo!

Some respect the classics
They know every part
Thunderbird,
Eldorado,
even Lincoln Town Car
Chevy conversion van
Camaro an also-ran
Thought you'd get a hand
On a new turbo-four Mustang

Where's the ton of chrome, and the tail fins?
And who's the other guy that's now in charge of GM?
And when did diesel fuel car engines?
What ever happened to 8-track, mono,
AM radio

Ford Fairmont, Granada
S.U.V. meant nada
There was Versailles and Caprice
The Gremlin gone from AMC
And kids then in high school
Who drove Pintos were uncool
The model year I've implied
Was 19, 19, 1979

Woo Hoo Hooooo!

Music----------

Spring bumpers; Landau tops
When did Chevy trucks become *Like a Rock*? (Like a Rock)
And when did safety become a factor?
Please make this stop, stop, stop! (scrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeee!)

Well here's the Fairmont, Granada
S.U.V. meant nada
There was Versailles and Caprice
The Gremlin gone from AMC
And kids then in high school
Who drove Pintos were uncool
The model year I've implied
1979

Woo Hoo Hooooo!

Ford Fairmont, Granada
S.U.V. meant nada
There was Versailles and Caprice
The Gremlin gone from AMC
And kids then in high school
Who drove Pintos were uncool
The model year I've implied
Was 19, 19, 1979

I know it's too late now, but the excellent 1979 Dodge Magnum XE and GT personal-luxury coupes (like Dodge's version of a Thunderbird) were in their last year of production, having been introduced late in 1977. If you ever re-write it, don't forget the Magnum.
